I have finally wrapped up my #30Grids project.  I went big on the last three and I'm so glad!  It was a challenge and they took about five times as long to complete, but I really feel like I stretched myself and learned some things.  So there's one regular sized one (8.5×11) and then three larger ones (19×24).  Take a peek:

One of the things that Matisse wrote in "Notes of a Painter" (part of the book, Matisse on Art) really resonated with me when I was sizing up my mixed media collages.  He wrote:

"Composition, the aim of which should be expression, is modified according to the surface to be covered. If I take a sheet of paper of a given size, my drawing will have a necessary relationship to its format. I would not repeat this drawing on another sheet of different proportions, for example, rectangular instead of square. Nor should I be satisfied with a mere enlargement, had I to transfer the drawing to a sheet the same shape, but ten times larger. A drawing must have an expansive force which gives life to the things around it. An artist who wants to transpose a composition from one canvas to another larger one must conceive it anew in order to preserve its expression; he must alter its character and not just square it up onto the larger canvas."

I feel like the first two large compositions suffer from simply being "sized up," whereas the final composition was conceived as a larger piece.

I'm still doing a bit of musing on everything that I learned from this grid project. There's a lot and I want to gather my thoughts into a coherent list.

On a personal note, we are having some work done on the outside of our house and there's banging and sawing and such from 7am-5pm every day.  It has thrown the baby's nap schedule off and as a result he has been up in the middle of night (and therefore so have I) almost every night for the past week or so.  I feel like my brain has fallen out of my head. As soon as I manage to get everyone to sleep through the night, I'm sure that I will be able to gather my thoughts and have some lessons to share. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by!
