After years and years of being a devoted cosmetic sponge user…dare I say I was one of the very first to use the method way back in 2009…I have now fallen in love with stencil brushes. Here are a few basic tips to get you started on a new love affair (mostly, it's faster):

Based outside of Boston, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is a painter, printmaker, and collage artist who constructs vibrant compositions. Her artwork investigates the interplay of identity and perception, inviting viewers to take a longer look. Julie works in layers, both physically and metaphorically, exploring what is visible and what is concealed. Passionate about connecting with and inspiring other artists, she shares her expertise through in-person workshops and her online classroom at MyArtPractice.com. Julie's achievements include high-profile clients, multiple publications - including her book, “Carve Stamp Play” - and exhibits in New York City and throughout Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Brown University.

  • This is terrific! I can see how it is faster. Also: much as I’d been a fan of the cosmetic sponges, I’m coming to realize they are just more non-biodegradable stuff going into landfills, and I’m trying to be more “earth-friendly” in my studio. Speaking of which: does anybody know a good substitute for baby wipes?

  • I have an old flannel bedsheet that I ripped up into pretty small rectangles and I use them over and over again till they’re ridiculous then I throw them away.
