Did you know that there are certain compositions that just seem to work every single time?
One of my go-to designs is called "The Grid." When I say, "The Grid," you probably think of something very rigid. But believe it or not, a grid is a wonderfully flexible thing. I recently made these two mixed media collages based on "The Grid" design:
I'm in the midst of a self-imposed challenge to create 30 mixed media collages only using the grid design. I'll be sure to share the results of this adventure and on August 14, I'll be teaching a three-hour live online mixed media collage class where we will take a deep dive into "The Grid" design. Through a series of exercises, you will explore different grid variations and learn how to build the grid. You will also learn how and when to break the grid and walk away from class with several completed abstract mixed media collages. Class is recorded and a link to download the recording will be sent to you after class.

This looks like a great follow-on for those of us who’ve taken boot camp and/or art parts, or for anyone who missed those classes, this might be a way to take a specific look at this aspect of design. I hope I’ll be in town.

The top collage is a challenge. If I focus hard on the brick-red patch, I can hold on and enjoy the way the patches support each other in a kind of architecture. But if I stray from the brick-red patch, then the strong horizontal movement in the black squiggle takes my eye off the page, as does the vertical center seam.
Love love love the bottom collage. The black circles give a center of interest. The circular shape is repeated in the background patterns, giving the composition unity. The blue areas cohere into a large blue patch, so that the individual blue patches don’t compete with the black circles for prominence. The red and green accents add interest without competing with the black circles.
