I surprised myself with how much I learned by reading and doing the exercises in Gerald Brommer's book, Collage Techniques.  It felt a little bit dry and academic at first (and it is), but once I started trying out the exercises (which didn't look that interesting to me at first), I really got into it.  Here's a replay of June's Book Club meeting all about this fine book:

Here are a few of the things I made based on the book & shared during the Book Club meeting:

I experimented with materials, adhesion methods, styles, and much more.  It really was a great experience that has opened up my brain to new possibilities.

If you'd like to see Gerald Brommer working on one of his collages, check out this excerpt from his instructional DVD:

Our next Book Club meeting is on July 7 at 12:15pm EST.  We will be discussing Printing by Hand by Lena Corwin

Book Club is FREE and streams live on both YouTube and Facebook.  You can chat with other people, chat with me, ask questions…it's lots of fun!  If you have a suggestion for a book that we should read, leave me a comment with the book and title.

As I mentioned during the livestream, I'm looking for a few people to join me on camera during the next Book Club and share what they've made inspired by the book.  If you're interested, follow the instructions I gave in the video.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • What I great watch as I was not able to attend! It reminded me to go back to that book and do the work but don’t try to create his art – just the process – this was my best takeaway from your book club. I will try your still life adaptation and explore this new direction. I know the iron method but have moved away from gloss gel because of sticky pages.

  • OMG! I have had this book on my shelves for year. Your book club review was truly illuminating! Thank you, Julie. Loved your review and plan on going through the book and water coloring some rice paper.

  • Wonderful review and thank you for posting here so. This is the second one I’ve watched…. not sure if there are any before these two? I soooo appreciate your take/style on the review, diving deep into portions that are most relevant to what you do, showing examples from your own exercises, discussing what you learned, and providing meaningful take-aways – not to mention all the encouragement and cheer-leading. You are a wonderful teacher. I don’t even do mixed media/collage but I take away something of value almost every time I stop by that I can apply to my own artful pursuits. Signing up for your Friday newsletter. And looking forward to the next book review. Enjoy your weekend!

  • PS – I also particularly love the top three examples from your sketchbook. I like the idea of working with two colors + black/white. The second is a great extrapolation of a traditional still life. I like the color textures on the washi paper in the third, and it definitely shows the value of thoughtful cropping. – Barbara

  • Great review, Julie. I’d better use some of the books that I have and see what progress I can make in my art using them. Thank you for reviewing the book. Alice
