I've been wanting to try out an art subscription box for a while. In my scrapbooking days, I loooooved kit clubs. So, I did some research and settled on ScrawlrBox. It's a UK-based art supply box. Because it's UK-based, there are art supplies in it from brands that are less common in the USA. I purchased a 12-month subscription and figured I'd really know after a year whether it was a good or bad fit. Because I'm in the US, my May box arrived in June. Here are the contents:
I go into great detail about everything in the box in the video:
Box Contents:
- Uni Posca Colored Pencils
- Liquid White Pencil
- Derwent Line Maker
- Size 2 Brush
- A5 Cartridge pad — in the US, we call it drawing paper (read this article about it)
- Scrawlr Box Materials: square art postcard, art supply menu, ScrawlrZine, sticker, candy
In brief, I didn't love this box. I had a bit of buyer's remorse. I can't say it wasn't worth the money, but I don't know if it was worth the money for me. I'm reserving judgment until I get several more boxes into my subscription.
The two other subscriptions I considered were: Art Snacks and Sketchbox. Do you have an art box subscription? What do you think?

Very enjoyable video– I usually don’t watch these on YouTube but this was very comprehensive and complete.

Thanks for sharing. Now I would like to see you draw something with only those art supplies. I have gotten a few sketchboxes. It is hard to do that. I enjoyed your video

Although I have been tempted, I haven’t bought a subscription box because I already have so many art supplies and don’t want to end up with items I already have. Thank you for sharing the video of this unboxing. It’s always interesting to see what’s in the subscription boxes. I think it would be a great gift to give to someone starting out who doesn’t have a lot of supplies.

I did ArtSnacks for quite awhile and really loved getting a little prezzie every month. I found the quality of the products, in general, to be of very good quality and did go out and purchase more of several of the items. They sent me several items from Japanese companies that I had been waffling over on the Jet Ink site, so it was nice to get a sample prior to committing. Living in the SF Bay Area I have pretty easy access to a wide variety of products at brick and mortar stores but I imagine that it would be an even nicer experience to receive goodies in the mail if I lived somewhere that was more of an art supply dessert.

I use Art Snacks and think that they have gotten better and that they were nice to begin with. I recommend starting in a month like June when they have their art plus box that is normally $40.00 and is now half off and see how you like it. The plus always has a nice art pad and extra materials. I also use the main $24 subscription most of the time and invest in the So Flat acrylics and Inktober boxes they are worth it, and I have found new product that I did not know I would love as much as I do. Sometimes they can send watercolor boxes or more pencils mechanical and colored pencils that I am not that into, but they are usually new product and I have found quite a few mechanical pencils that I like. This is the main art subscription box that I like and I love the sales they have if you like the product and they also do BYOB- build your own box months where you can get just paints and inks that cost more thank your normal subscription fee and make up for the occasional month when you may get a nice box but you can’t relate to- I really enjoy my subscription-let me know if you try it.
For the entire month of June, take 50% off your first box on a new monthly Plus subscription. Use code WASHI at checkout.

Full disclosure, I am an Art Snacks subscriber for some time, um, 4 years? I really like the Art Snacks info videos and that is how I was introduced to bybun (also full disclosure I am a patreon of bybun). For Art Snacks the months vary so you can’t make a complete informed decision on one box. And I really liked your way of testing the supplies, I am a science person by training and fully testing is good for personal education. The brushes we get with the Art Snacks boxes are of very good quality. I have gotten several things I would not have tried except for Art Snacks. And about colored pencils my favs are Faber Castell Polychromos so I think getting one of the Faber Castell for comparison would be interesting to you. But I also use other brands like Prismacolor, Van Gogh, Bruynzeel and Derwent Inktense. I get the small Art Snacks which doesn’t include a support but have been thinking about getting the plus version.

So helpful to see you receiving and testing out one of these. Looking forward to seeing more! A few years ago, I purchased (not subscribed) 2 “past month” Art Snacks boxes, when they were 50% off. The items were good quality/brands and I used some of the items I received, but they were not necessarily up my alley in the end. I did not subscribe mainly because of the price and because I’d rather purchase specific things I want/need as opposed to getting a few random items each month. I think I like the IDEA of the boxes, but I don’t necessarily want all the contents of the boxes.

Great comments from everyone…..I used to subscribe to monthly card making boxes which at that time were right up my alley in the craft department before I discovered gel plates and took a hard turn into mixed media. I liked Deborah Freedman’s suggestion of trying out some of the “past month” Art Snacks boxes…that would be a good test of whether it was worth it to jump into a full subscription and end up with a bunch of supplies that hardly get used.
Your video, Julie, was spot on. I like the way you tested out all the products…your paper looked like such a cool mixed media statement at the end!

You know, I was going to, but then I decided that I didn’t want to. I didn’t find the box inspiring and it would have been a waste of the precious little creative time I have. But you can see examples from lots of other people at the #ScrawlrChallenge hashtag: https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/scrawlrchallenge/

I also like that I get stuff I’m not naturally attracted to. Perhaps it will change my mind? It happens to me all the time with food (and even sometimes people).

Please do not ever refer to yourself as “dumb”. I think that you have a brilliance. Just because you do not like an art material or an art material does not function well is not a reflection on you!! Please do not use that word to describe yourself. You are far from “dumb”!!!!!

This was great Really enjoyed listening to your thought process & watching how you tested the different items. Thanks for sharing – always appreciated! (not a big colored pencil fan either)
