If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, the concept is simple: It's a commitment to take ten minutes each day to do something in your art journal. No need to finish anything or even like it. It's about making the time to nourish your creativity every day! If you have the time to flip through your phone, you have the time to Art Journal Every Day. If you'd like to share what you make, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.
I'm currently working on a new self-paced sketchbook class that's all about how to start keeping a visual diary or a sketchbook journal, like this:
These are pages from a sketchbook I worked in when I lived in NYC.
This kind of sketchbook is slightly different from a sketchbook that's about sourcing/developing new ideas, like these pages from my "working" sketchbook:
(Assuming that the first class goes well, I plan to also create a self-paced class on creating a "working" sketchbook, later in the year.)
While researching the topic of sketchbooks, I came across a few videos that I really liked and wanted to share:
My takeaway: Sketchbooks are personal and should be kept private.
My takeaway: Sketchbooks are workspaces and don't need to be "finished art."
My takeaway: Ordinary objects can become extraordinary when drawn with care.
Let me know your thoughts on sketchbooks. Do you keep one? Or several? Do you have sketchbook questions? I'd love to know!

Although I’ve been through phases of drawing – taken drawing classes, learned that I CAN do it – I’ve never gotten to the point that I could do it without anxiety. So right now I’ve given myself permission to not draw. Sort of like skiing – tried it, learned it, didn’t enjoy it, moved on.

I am really grateful that you gather these things together and put them out there for us. I thought that the middle video of the three women talking about sketchbooks was most valuable for me personally. I struggle because I love “art” and I love “making things” but I see myself as someone who “can'” draw. I am almost paralyzed when it comes to putting pencil to paper. I have been on instagram for about 18 months now, and I love it. It has opened up a whole new world to me. However, I find myself buying every art material that every artist I like uses and still ending up with, “I can’t draw.” I can’t explain it, but this video has freed me up somehow. Thanks.

i get frustrated with true sketching … i haven’t put in enough time and effort. i do use my ‘sketch” books for all kinds of play and experimenting. loose papers are a mess for me so i decided to use my books and pull out pages i want to use elsewhere … i am a big fan of spiral/coil-bound types for this reason. i don’t like the look of discs, but love the idea of removing a page to work and returning it … i have made my own in this style with book rings for ages.

thanks for these thoughts. I do keep a few notebooks with sketches but because they have so much writing hesitate to call them sketchbooks. Huh? And I am particular about the types of paper but then spend some more $$ and then the paper is too precious. Huh? I know, it is just paper and if I leave 50 beautiful but unused sketchbooks in my estate what’s the point of that? Yes, self talk here. Thanks again.
