Hello, friends! Here is a little bit about life around here right now:
I am working on a tutorial for the paper birds I shared last week (using either a cut file or a PDF for hand cutting).
It takes about four times as long to make the tutorial as it does to make the project. So hopefully I will have that finished by next week.
Steve shoveled out a tiny snow maze for the baby in our driveway. He loved it and so did I!
Of course, it's nothing compared to the world's largest snow maze in Manitoba:
Let's not tell the baby that he's getting the inferior version. 😉
Speaking of the baby (and it turns out I'm one of those annoying parents who *is* always speaking of the baby), he is 15 months old and sweet as can be.
I feel very lucky that (a) he gets to spend plenty of time with his Grandma and (b) he looooooves books! If you have any art-related book recommendations for kids, let me know! I'd love to build up his library.
Current art crush?
I recently started following art_by_hema and I'm loving the saturated journal pages she posts. Here's a peek at some of her fabulous work:
I looked back at some of her earlier work before I started following her and it's different. Not a different artist, but a different mood. Take a peek:
It's fascinating to me to see the journey. She's only been posting regularly to instagram since 2020, so you can go through her whole art journey in a pretty short period of time.
So, there you have it! That's the scoop on life around here at the moment. If you're a monthly member, February's personal vlog and studio vlog are both in online classroom!

Love seeing the photos of your little one…such a handsome man. And thanks for introducing me to another exciting artist.

Julie, the snow maze is adorable! Here are some art-related children’s books. Your son might be a little too young for them right now but he’s growing fast!
Pish Posh Said Hieronymus Bosch by Nancy Willard
Mitsumasa Anno’s series:
Anno’s Alphabet (I think this one would work for a 15-month-old)
Anno’s Counting Book
Anno’s USA
Anno’s Magical ABC
and many others!

Hi Julie,
So glad Steve didn’t try to recreate that Manitoba snow maze! And your little guy just gets cuter all the time.
One of my favorite children’s authors, both for content and the art, is Eric Carle. He’s in his 90s now but I was lucky to hear him speak at a conference many years ago where he casually tossed around large pieces of work, dropping them to the floor and giving every elementary school teacher in the audience apoplexy! Down to earth and delightful, his art work is collage from papers he’s painted. There’s a video of him at work (in his late 80s) here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqqtq1UaTiE
Enjoy — and enjoy his books. The Very Lonely Firefly is a great one to save for warmer weather when you can read it in the evening’s dusk and watch the fireflies light up!

I’m glad you asked for book suggestions. In recent years, I’ve had a faint memory of a book with collaged illustrations…and I always thought “I should Google, to try and remember.” But, of course – never found the time. But, I finally Googled, and got my answer: It was “Whistle for Willie” by Ezra Jack Keats! I feel like his distinct artistic style, coupled with the main character being a person of color, make his books a perfect addition to your son’s library.

Hi Julie, I, too, loved seeing the picture of your son & his grandma & of the snow maze. My boys & I enjoyed the wonderful illustrations in the books by Jeannie Baker, such as “Window”, as although they have no words, they tell a complete story. We also enjoyed Barbara Reid’s plasticine illustrated books.
