Pocket Scrapbooking is the generic term for "Project Life" — a commercialized term coined by Becky Higgins. In essentials, it's a form of scrapbooking in which you use page protectors with pockets to wrangle your memories. I started doing Project Life and sharing the pages on my blog back in 2012:
In 2016, I stopped sharing photos from my albums, but I did keep doing it. I took some of those albums off the shelves to snap a photo or two and here you go…
And I just finished my 2020 album:
So, why did I stop sharing? There are a few reasons:
- My life got complicated when I started dating after divorce. I needed a bit of privacy from the judgment of the internet.
- Most people who read my blog didn't seem to be interested in scrapbooking. I noticed that there were very few comments or likes on posts about it. I'm not 100% driven by that stuff, but it just didn't see worth it to take the photos and edit them and write the posts if no one was interested.
- I got some advice — from someone I trust — that I shouldn't mix up my "crafty stuff" with my "fine art stuff" or people would get confused. This is a hard one for me because I love scrapbooking and memory keeping. I also love creating fine art. I think they can co-exist. In my opinion, we create too many boundaries. After all, what is an art journal but a form of memory keeping? Creativity is creativity and it is glorious in all its forms.
Do you scrapbook? I'd love to know!

I like that you are still scrapbooking! Me too! But it is different and more relaxed then back in the day. I still do traditional scrapbooking even but rather than every day it ends up being vacation scrapbooks and mini albums. At the height of it it did feel like people were scrapbooking to document and share everything with everyone. Now it does feel more personal and the pages I do are more mixed with artsy expression. FWIW I disagree with the advice you got. My guess is 90% of the people who do artsy stuff also are still documenting/scrapbooking alongside it’s just in journals or junk journals now.

Absolutely memory keeping, using Heidi Swapp’s Stop The Blur and it works for me in a way that is fun and isn’t overwhelming. Having known you “virtually” for all these years, it is amazing for me to look back and see the change and the “oh, I remember you blogged about that”. So fun, and hope you/we never stop … maybe it’s the pandemic, maybe because I’m now an empty nester, but this memory keeping, journaling truly gives me life and hope … that we do get thru difficult times, treasure the good and embrace all that weaves in/out of our lives. Thanks for all of your inspiration with art journaling, memory keeping and most of all, to let go of perfectionism and just do it. I know my kids, who are off living their own lives now, love that I stalk their Insta pages and keep/write about those pics in a book that they can actually touch, read, feel … it’s truly lovely!

I love your work, particularly the art journals. I don’t actually scrapbook, but my art journals have a lot of pictures worked into the content. I am now keeping running art journals of travels and of family gatherings. Sometimes I keep a daily journal until full and then rest awhile. I plan to start a faces journal. I particularly love Gelly pages and working with alcohol inks, but I use lots of materials. I introduced my sisters to art journaling and each of us have a journal of all the places the three of us have scattered our parents ashes, still in progress as long as we have ashes to scatter. Your work and your style fit with mine. I get restless with some who teach as they talk on and on without doing any art to watch. Your timing is perfect for me to see and remember what your doing and sometimes take a not about a product. I’ve been following you for several years and hope you keep it up

I stopped project life at the end of 2014 and for a few days now I have really wanted to start over … I still have a lot of pockets pages but I see in the French shops that it is difficult to find albums … so fewer people to scrape in pockets ??? Your article is timely to help me start againthe PL !! I love yours !! Thanks JUlie!

I loved seeing these pages. I am a pocket scrapbooker wannabe. I rather enjoy seeing artists who also do “craft stuff” since my stuff is also all over the map. (Gosh there is a lot of judgment in the whole art versus craft discussions.)

I certainly do more art journaling than scrapbooking, but the two often crossover. Every year I do a birthday book for each of my three grandchildren. I include pictures, art and stories about things we did together that year.. Besides photos, I spend the whole year collecting “stuff” for making collages and I make gelli prints that coordinate with photos. It’s lots of fun and helps keep me sane and out of trouble during this pandemic.

Aww Julie, I was at that class in 2014 — the pages pictured here! That was so much fun and I’m still online friends with my ‘neighbour’ from that day! I’m not doing as much scrapbooking these days. I’m still managing to keep memories through journaling, and documenting details and feelings with the photos I take. I do love how you bring people together. I’m also still online friends with someone in the Netherlands, whom I ‘met’ when you did a class/classes on gelli printing. Remember the deli paper discussions? You had people from all over the world there — and still do— and we were trying to figure out the European equivalent. Good times and wonderful memories! Thank you for that!

Yes, I do a version of pocket pages. Mostly to document each year of my daughter’s life. She takes a lot of good photos so I have material. I have also been collecting photos/notes of this Coronavirus time and hope to document some of that as well. For better or worse, this has been a history making time.
In my opinion, all art has valid worth. Crafty vs fine art is all an expression of ones creativity. Why draw lines? If it makes you happy, do it!

In my opinion, all art has valid worth. Crafty vs fine art is all an expression of ones creativity. Why draw lines? If it makes you happy, do it!

I love that you still scrapbook. I do too. Mine have transformed quite a bit too. I am more creative and rely more on my own art now than I did years ago . It’s great to look back and remember life then and to see how life has changed. Great for posterity too!

I still scrapbook. Well plan to more than do but I want to change that this year. I find that instant on your phone or other digital photos have a downside….too many and hard to pick the best but showing all is overwhelming…there is something about sitting down with a photo album or scrapbook that feels more connected, slower in a good way like I’m really experiencing a bit of any event and sharing that with friends. In fact a few years ago friends stopped and asked about one of our sons who had recently graduated from college. Did I have pictures? I got up and handed them a photo album (finally I immediately printed some photos and put them into an album, not really a scrapbook but that would be done later). Anyway, they sat with their kids on either side going through the album. It wasn’t a look, swipe, move on. There were more questions, more discussion, more…..experience while those pictures were shared. Afterward my friend even said how nice it was to look at printed photos. It wasn’t just the photos, they weren’t special from a technical standpoint, it was the sharing experience. Even the touching of the album and the photo.

I look at your blog as an artsy/crafty look into your life. I love it all! And honestly… what’s the difference between your scrap pockets and your art journal. They’re both artsy glimpses into your life. Just in a different artistic form.

I started following your blog because of the scrapbooking. I would love to see you continue sharing some of your scrapbooking, especially any paper pages you do. I have not gotten into the fine art stuff yet but do enjoy seeing your art journal pages, too. Keep sharing, please!

I agree w Barb in Kazoo!! The act of holding an album, looking at the stories to go with the pictures is so much more personal and so much better than swiping through someone’s phone.

Scrapbooking is how I found you, I don’t know how many year ago. Scrapbooking is my main creative outlet, it’s my art. Not too long ago, I purchased a scraps pack from you and so some of your art is now part of my art! Having a 24 yr old child, you will be so very happy to have all those memories saved as he gets older. You think you’ll never forget, especially since you only have one, but you do.

I found you thru scrapbooking and I’ve stayed. I don’t comment but I want you to know I’m here and want to continue to see your memory keeping.

Yes, I scrapbook a lot, and make art a lot, and continue project life along side all my other memory keeping. It’s all part of the way I express my creativity.

I have done scrapbooking in the past, but I am getting the itch to start again. I love that you don’t make a big deal of how you preserve your memories. Life get’s complicated and you begin to stop doing what brings you JOY. Thanks for sharing.

Love your scrapbook abums! I have been scrapbooking since 1988 with Creative Memories. Used to meet once a week with a group to scrap. Now I only scrap once a year at a 4 day retreat. This year it was canceled because of the virus.

I love the idea of pocket scrapbooking…I had never heard of it. I agree that too many put artificial boundaries between crafting and fine art. One can enhance and inspire the other. I think it’s freeing for both the artist and art viewer to see all kinds of work coming from one person. It speaks to all of life: sometimes you take the time to make a really special meal and sometimes you open a box of mac and cheese, sometimes you tailor a really special garment and sometimes you just get it done and hope no one looks at the inside. Thank you for being true to yourself.

I too like to mix it up and I say POO to anyone who doesn’t. Being a total artist, this is what you have to do. Make every aspect of life creative!

Yes ma’am Still scrapbooking, art journaling, Gellie printing…all the things. Never did pocket scrapbooking but I do like to add extra photos to compliment a layout by using added photo type pockets or a 6×12 page. I like the way you journal….I’d like to do something similar. It looks more relaxing and fun your way of journaling that ties words with art. Just add photos. One day I’ll get to doing more of that.

Yes ma’am Still scrapbooking, art journaling, Gellie printing…all the things. I’m a scrapbooker. I love seeing your pocket pages. I’ve always used traditional 12×12 pages, but thought about changing to pocket pages. Seems like a diary with photos.

I am still doing Project Life (since 2011) and love to see your layouts, which provide fresh ideas and encouragement to memory keep.

I love that you’re still doing pocket scrapbooking. I’ve been scrapbooking since 1995. For the past 4-5 years I’ve documented everyday life in a Big Happy Planner. I love the size and results.

I too am a scrapbooker and started following you about 8 years ago. I do traditional layouts, pocket pages, and minialbumns, I also do some art journaling, card making, stamp carving, collage, watercolor and have taken up quilting, which I love. I love the all the different mediums you use, the varied techniques, and your fearless, joyful, colorful, artistic point of view. Thank you!

Scrapbooker here! I don’t do mixed media or carve stamps or sew quilts, though I enjoy seeing all those that you do. But definitely keep sharing the scrapbooking!

Yes, I am a Project Lifer and I have always LOVED the way you do yours (making it so much more than just photos and journaling but adding all the artsy bits and pieces!) I found you through Ali Edwards eons ago and you have introduced me to SO MANY fun creative outlets! I deeply appreciate all that you share on your blog and videos and podcasts (love your ma!) Please continue to share whatever you feel comfortable with. I love watching your family (in a non creepy way) through your blog and beyond. Thank you Julie!

I love your way of pocket journaling and I missed seeing your pages here on the blog. I don´t scrapbook myself but I take a lot of photos and would love to have a go at this.
I don´t carve stamps or quilt either but everything creative gives me inspiration so thank you for sharing and inspiring!

I found you through scrapbooking, and I love the overlap between crafting and fine art. I think that you influence me in my hobby (scrapbooking) through your art. I love that you still scrapbook, because I think that it is an amazing way to document life. Seeing these photos reminded me how long I’ve been following you! Thank you for sharing.

I don’t do traditional scrapbooking anymore, but would love to learn more about your pocket scrapbooking tools, supplies, and techniques! I also love to mix art journaling and scrapbooking and memory keeping, so I’d love to see workshops on your techniques for this! For me, it all meshes together! One of the many reasons I love following you is that you do so many arts and crafts and combine things, which is how I work too.

I have scrapbooked for 20+ years. My scrapbooks are 12×12 and a mixture of traditional & pocket-pages. I have a few times stopped for a while from burnout to do other crafts – my latest was a couple of years of cardmaking. But I’m getting back into it now – catching up on time lost. I leave always loved it and that love is stronger than ever. Such a great place to practice all types of art and crafts.

I do scrapbook — although my 2020 output was dismal for predictable and not-so-predictable reasons. I’m sure that’s how I found you originally — perhaps you were a guest on the Paperclipping Roundtable. But I am “here” for whatever you are sharing from your creative life. 🙂

I love your style. I would totally keep following you if you added them in or if you started to share them elsewhere. I get so discouraged when I see all the generic “pretty and clean” pages when I go searching for inspiration, but as soon as I saw your page I was like “This!! This is what I want to see! Creativity welcomed and merged into the pockets” Thank you for sharing, and I hope to see more xx
