Some New “Composed Gelatin Prints”

During the process of designing some new stencils for The Crafter's Workshop, I created some new "composed gelatin prints" in order to test out the stencils.  There are two things to note in that sentence:

  1. Composed gelatin prints are prints created with intention, thought, and a design eye.  They are meant to be finished art to hang on the wall rather than collage fodder or backgrounds.  (You can learn how to make your own in my year long gelatin printing class or you can purchase one of mine in my shop.)
  2. I test out all of my stencil designs to make sure that they work in actuality (not just conceptually) for the kind of work that I do.  Because I'm in a gelli-obsessed frame of mind, it seemed natural to test them out on the plate.

Without further ado, here are the prints:

CactusFence-wm

CandyBubbles-wm
I really enjoy the meditative process of creating layers and layers and layers of color and pattern, testing out ideas and experimenting with shapes.

Have you tried gelatin printing?  What do you like about the process?  What do you struggle with?  I'd love to know!

  • Well, Julie – I’ve finally signed up for your February gelli printing workshop. I’ve been using a gelli plate for a number of years, but I need some rudimentary instruction to really like what I’ve printed! I’m also taking your free stenciling class. Thanks for that!

  • I hope it’s OK for me to take only a single class and not commit to taking a full year’s worth. Please let me know, Julie.

  • I am totally addicted and love single prints and layering. I will be doing your year of gelli printing, though. Sometimes my friends ask me why I do classes when I already know how to do something. Well you know even a master can still learn new things and the inspiration from watching another person is also very important. Looking forward to next month.
