Art Journal Every Day: Sketchbook vs. Art Journal

AJEDHeader2020

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, the concept is simple: It's a commitment to take ten minutes each day to do something in your art journal.  No need to finish anything or even like it.  It's about making the time to nourish your creativity every day!  If you have the time to flip through your phone, you have the time to Art Journal Every Day.  If you'd like to share what you make, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  You can find new Art Journal Every Day posts here on the blog most Fridays.  The archives go back to the first Art Journal Every Day post in 2010.

I have a sketchbook and an art journal.  Truth be told I have more than just one of each.  (I'm sure you can relate.)  How do I determine what goes in the sketchbook and what goes in the art journal?  For me, it's easy:

  • My sketchbook is a place to explore ideas on purpose.
  • My art journal is a place to journal my day and play.

What does that mean?

I open my sketchbook when I want to work out an idea…

How about you?  Do you keep a separate sketchbook and art journal?  Let me know!

I hope you'll join me for my live online Sketchbookery class on February 13&20

  • I keep 3 books. 1) A sketchbook for sketching usually pretty finished ones. 2) A book for journaling. Right now I am working in a book that I started in December of 2019 that morphed into an expression of my feelings about things that are happening in the pandemic. I don’t work in it everyday. 3)is a book of technique samples. I also have some books of watercolor paper in various sizes for moderately finished watercolors. I like working in my books, commercial or handmade by me. Everything is in one place and easy to store on a shelf.

  • I have so many that I start for various reasons. I don’t really journal but do like to sketch, paint, collage, whatever. I wish I could consolidate and/or work on one thing at a time, but, alas, that’s just not me.
