2020 Holiday Gift Guide: Art Supplies

In case you're thinking of buying some art supplies for yourself or leaving a list for Santa, I've put together a list of some of my favorite art supplies, categorized by price:

UNDER $10

Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper — I use this paper for everything.  I use it for paintings, sketches, underpaper, bookbinding — I even use it as a white background for taking photos!  I buy the big sheets and cut them down as needed.

Strathmore
VersaFine Clair Ink Pads — I just bought a whole bunch of these pigment ink pads and so far, I love them!  I have found that they don't dry on top of acrylic paint, but they're fabulous on paper.  The colors are vibrant and intense.

Versafine

UNDER $25

Cup Holder — How is this an art supply?  I have four of them in my art studio.  One on every single table.  It's the thing that keeps me from drinking my paint water and knocking over my cup of coffee or glass of water.  I love the slot for the cup handle.

Cupholder
Prismacolor White Pencils (one dozen) — I've been using a white Prismacolor Pencil on top of dark colors and it has been great.  It works on top of paint.  It's white white.  You don't have to worry about ruining the tip (just sharpen it).   My one complaint is that I tend to break the tips pretty frequently.  But I just sharpen it and keep moving!

Whitepencil

UNDER $50

Permapaque Markers — I use these markers every single day.  Every.  Single. Day.  They don't smell. They have two tips (one bullet and one chisel).  They work great on top of dried acrylic paint.  I love them.

Permapaque
Paper-Dedicated Rotary Cutter — In the last year, I have been cutting a lot of paper with a rotary cutter.  It makes it easy to trim down books, big sheets of paper, stacks of paper, etc.  Because I also cut fabric, I have two rotary cutters — one just for paper and one just for fabric.

Rotarycutter

UNDER $100

Arkon Phone Holder — I often get asked about what I use to film my videos and this is it!  Whether you want to post instagram videos or create an online class, I highly recommend this phone holder.

Arkon
Distress Oxide Ink Pads — I have to confess that I haven't gotten these yet.  They've been ordered, but they're not in my hot little hands at the moment.  I waited and waited and waited to order them. Why do I need another set of ink pads?!  But I have seen more and more cool things that you can do with them since they are fairly opaque and work on dark surfaces.  I'm excited to do some experimenting!

Distressoxide

OVER $100

Siser Heat Press — If you do a lot of projects with Heat Transfer Vinyl or you're looking to try out infusible ink, a heat press is a must.  I've road tested this one over the last week or two and I really like it.  It's big and heavy, but it does a great job.  Perfect for people with an etsy shop making custom tees!

Heatpress

Wacom Tablet — This is another thing that I use every single day.  It makes many of the repetitive computer tasks I have (like photo editing) much easier and it allows me to draw on my computer.  (I will say that I also use my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for a lot of the digital drawing that I do and then I edit those drawings on my computer with this tablet.)

Tablet
So that's just a few of the things that I love and think you might love too!  What's on your art supply shopping list?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • permapaques. I was going on amazon to search for them when your blog post popped up. perfect timing! plus, I tried a few Versafine Claires from our local michaels – not much selection – and I love them. they are juicy, provide great coverage, don’t smell (staz-on has an awful smell), and easy to move from color to color without staining the previous color.

  • I am wondering what programs you use to draw on the iPad pro?
And I will say you will be glad for the Oxide ink, I know I love it, especially the effect that comes when you play with water on it, just a tiny spray can give nice effects 🙂
