If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, the concept is simple: It's a commitment to take ten minutes each day to do something in your art journal. No need to finish anything or even like it. It's about making the time to nourish your creativity every day! If you have the time to flip through your phone, you have the time to Art Journal Every Day. If you'd like to share what you make, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. You can find new Art Journal Every Day posts here on the blog most Fridays. The archives go back to the first Art Journal Every Day post in 2010.
I talk a lot about daily art. I know that it has been vital to my growth and development as an artist. I believe that it can be for so many others. From "Art Journal Every Day" to "Carve December" or "PrintInktober," I have spearheaded many of these "daily art" challenges to help motivate others to make art every single day. But I hope that I have also been clear that giving yourself grace for not creating every day is also important.
This first journal page encapsulates the end of 2019 for me. There's an entry in November on the day we went to the hospital to have the baby, one entry for the entire month of December, and then a few entries for January. C'est la vie. Some is better than none.
And on this next page you can see "every day" is pretty spotty:
Instead of being mad at myself for not getting into my art journal every day, I am focused on the fact that I managed to journal several times in January! Yay!
As a fun fact about this page, I had a precious piece of deli paper. It was the first time I had figured out how to do a purposeful layered print on the gelatin plate and I just didn't want to use it. But I finally glued that precious piece of paper down to this art journal spread and then worked on softening the edges so that it wasn't so obvious as to where the print started and ended.
Here on this final spread you can see one of my favorite motifs: hands. I'm really terrible at drawing hands, which means I need to practice!
I hope you enjoyed this peek into my art journal. Remember: be kind to yourself. Do what you can. Making art every day is a good idea, but so is not being stressed out about making art every day.
Have a great weekend!

I like your quote about not being able to control other people. It reminds me of a quote by the Dali Lama that I like “Do not let the behaviour of others destroy your inner peace. I really enjoy seeing your artwork, your creativity is amazing and very inspirational. I was inspired by your snowflake cards and so I finally bought a gelli plate and tried my first prints. They came out ok and there is definitely room for improvement but that I think, is the fun part. Happy holidays you you and your family. Linda
ps. Your baby is really cute!

It is important to me to do something creative every day. Sometimes it is art journaling, sometimes designing and making stencils or stamps, carving or using a stamp, or playing with paint in some way. I enjoy journaling and have more than one type of journal. I don’t always art journal everyday. That’s ok. What’s not okay is sapping the joy of creating and expressing that joy by requiring myself to do any of it. It’s the most joyful part of my day!
