I carved a new block over the weekend.

I’m one of the millions of Americans who voted early. I voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for many reasons, but here are four really important ones:

  1. Science is real. Climate change is real.
  2. Black Lives Matter.
  3. “How a society treats its most vulnerable is always the measure of its humanity.”
  4. Pre-existing conditions shouldn’t be a barrier to health insurance.

  • You just lost me…Keep your politics separate from your art. We are already getting hammered by every possible means about the election this year. I don’t want to hear about politics from a “artist”, a source that is supposed to provide fun and relaxation.

  • I am happy that you are so fortunate as to not be impacted by science, preexisting conditions, safety of your sons and daughters, and financial security. I only wish that you would not feel threatened by statements that acknowledge others are not so fortunate. Artist’s works are often political. I’m sure you are familiar with Picasso’s guernica, the work of James Baldwin or from a much different political perspective the old movie, lBirth of a Nation? I agree that you have the right to disagree with The position presented here. However, I wish you had chosen to articulate the reasons for your disagreement by focusing on where you disagree with Julie rather than on saying artists are to be muted. Thank you for reading if you have and I hope you and your family with enjoy all the upcoming holidays and stay healthy.

  • A beautiful stamp, I really love those inverted words. And a perfectly concise list, which I appreciate you sharing. In my opinion, one of art’s main purposes is to communicate ideas and/or preserve history, and this stamp does both.
It is disheartening (& somewhat frightening) that this election is as close as it is, when it should be an obvious landslide. How have so many people collectively forgotten that honesty, integrity, compassion, and FACTS matter?? They all should be embraced & exhibited, NOT mocked, by the “leader of the free world”. I’ll be dropping off my ballot for Biden/Harris 2020 this week!

  • You are such a beautiful human being – thanks for your enthusiasm for life and art! And I love the way art intersects with life especially current events and a wonderful way to document it. I learn a lot about life (political – can’t get away from it) through art – films, songs, relationships, spirituality, science, etc. One example is the Crochet Coral Reef art your mom mentioned on the podcast the other day.

  • For those who dislike Julie’s political comment, please consider how much joy you’ve gotten from Julie’s art and her self-less sharing of her techniques and art over the years through her blog and her videos! I’ve enjoyed all of it and admire her artistry, innovation and energy! Would you really deny this artistic powerhouse who you’ve come to rely on for inspiration, fun and laughter the freedom to make one calm and thoughtful statement of her political opinion?
Julie, – thank you for using your voice in such an effective way. By providing the reasons behind your vote you are showing that you are making an informed choice! I love the stamp – and I love your courage to speak out even more. It is hard to risk upsetting your followers, but it is equally important for everyone to let their voice be heard. Art has been a strong force for political expression throughout history, and artists shouldn’t stop now. Thank you Julie, for hours and hours of inspiring tutorials and “arting” videos.

  • Thank you, Julie, for your art and your thoughtful voice. I agree with you 100% (and for the same reasons) and would point out that artists, like athletes and the rest of us, have the right to speak. An athlete who, not long ago, was told to “Shut up and dribble,” by a Fox host has now used his voice and connections to make it easier for others to vote. Art that makes us think is powerful and I’m sorry that there are those who feel your art has to be separate from the world we all live in. Art and voices like yours make it a better place.

  • The stamp is beautiful, but what I really loved about your post in declaring who you voted for is that you included REASONS to back up your feelings. I admire that. There is a quote from Ivanka Trump in her book The Trump Card: “Perception is more important than reality. If someone perceives something to be true, it is more important than if it is in fact true. Let the other guy think what he wants. This doesn’t mean you should be duplicitous or deceitful, but don’t go out of your way to correct false assumptions if it plays to your advantage.” Something to think about when politicians speak.

  • I too have cast my vote early. I completely agree with your summary of why you chose to vote the way you did. This is the most important election we have ever been involved in. The outcome will indeed change the direction of our country.
It really bothers me that so many people feel compelled to “put down an artist” for speaking their political views. If someone doesn’t agree with the artist’s view, then fine. Don’t follow them. But asking an artist to “stop” speaking their mind is absurd.
    Love the stamp!

  • Absurd is a good word for it.
It is also incredibly dismissive & belittling to act as if Julie is a one-dimensional person with no worthwhile thoughts outside of art. Julie shows us everyday what a wise, creative, thoughtful individual she is. And, as if all of that isn’t enough – this is Julie’s space to share what she wants! Bravo to her for putting herself out there today and everyday.

And totally get annoyed with peeps who think that artists shouldn’t have opinions. Why not?

  • Julie, I LOVE this! Yes, people, vote! The stamp and prints are fabulous.
To the others who are upset that this post is political: she isn’t trying to push her views on you, just sharing her stamp and print, her voting choice and the reasons. I am truly amazed that people are surprised and put out when artists have and share their opinions and beliefs. Isn’t our art, whether it be music, painting, photos, poetry, etc, an extension of us – and more than the sum of our parts – our past, our beliefs, our values, our experiences
One of the things I love about you, is that you will continue being you, regardless… keep on being you.
Oh, and my birthday is on the 3rd. Let’s hope I get a great birthday present 😉

  • My mother always taught me, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything. This IS the United States of America. Our founders (flawed and imperfect human beings as we ALL are) valued FREE SPEECH, which is what Julie exercised here. We are NOT always going to agree with other people!! Oh for the days when people could GRACIOUSLY disagree with others…
Just because someone doesn’t share your view on an issue doesn’t make them: 1. Your enemy, 2. Inhuman, 3. Worthy of your disrespect, or 4. Someone who needs to be silenced.
A BETTER response would be for you to try to UNDERSTAND where people who don’t think like you are coming from. It would make YOU a more compassionate person.
Thank you, Julie for sharing your ALL views and for sharing your wonderful arty goodness. The stamp is beautiful. NEVER be afraid to voice YOUR opinions on YOUR blog. We come here to hear from YOU!
