Art Journal Every Day: Pages Without Journaling

AJEDHeader2020

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, the concept is simple: It's a commitment to take ten minutes each day to do something in your art journal.  No need to finish anything or even like it.  It's about making the time to nourish your creativity every day!  If you have the time to flip through your phone, you have the time to Art Journal Every Day.  If you'd like to share what you make, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  You can find new Art Journal Every Day posts here on the blog most Fridays.  The archives go back to the first Art Journal Every Day post in 2010.

In the last few years, I notice that I'm less drawn to my daily journaling practice.  I still enjoy a daily arting practice in my art journal, but I don't always feel like writing.  It's funny, because I've always been a huge advocate of writing in your journal.  But I think creativity ebbs and flows and one of the ways to ensure you don't stagnate is to listen to your inner voice and do the things you are enjoying at the moment.  So, here are three art journal spreads from 2019 that are just art without the words:

1-LeafStamp-wm
I think I mentioned before that I've been working on a stamp carving class as a companion to this year's #CarveDecember.  Well, I've been working on it since 2019.  The left side of this spread features a stamp from a lesson all about creating tesselating images.

However, tesselation queen, Marta Harvey, is one of the guest stars in the course and she's teaching a tesselation technique, so I may scrap this lesson and bow down to her expertise.  We shall see.

You can see that this page is full of star-shaped holes:

And if you peek at the yellow print below, you'll see one of my very first attempts at nature printing with leaves:

2-detail-bits-wm
I've definitely come a long way in a year!

So now we get to the reason for all those star-shaped holes:

2-Stripes&Stars-wm

Half of those stars were cut with my electronic cutter and half were cut by hand.  Can you tell the difference?

This spread features a piece of deli paper I sketched a design on.

3-YouAreEnough-wm
This…

…was a quick sketch I did that became two different pieces:

YouAreEnough-wm
BeKind-wm
When I came across the sketch, I couldn't bear to cover it up.  So, I didn't.  I did, however, add a small stamped tag:

3-detailtag-wm
And the left side of the page is all gelatin printing:

So there you have it!  I hope you'll make some time for art journaling this weekend!  Talk to you sooooon!

  • I’ve picked it up again after a couple of years (!) away from the practice. How did that happen? Anyway, I’m enjoying it a lot and I’m doing just what you say- spending ten minutes at it each morning. It is such a joy and I’m loving watching the pages develop bit by bit.

  • I love art journaling without words. I struggle to find what I want to write. I’ll use a stamp or sticker sometimes, but I just enjoy the creative process. I don’t think we always need words, the art is enough. To me anyway.
