Hello, friends! Here's a little bit about life around here right now:
Drawing hundreds of little lines in my art journal.
Also, online classes. So many online classes. This week I'm teaching Block Printing on Fabric…
…but I've also got lots of other live online classes coming up:
- ScanNCut DX: Super Basic Beginner
- CanvasWorkspace on your iPad
- ScanNCut DX: Working with HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl)
- Pamphlet Stitch Art Journal
- ScanNCut DX: Rhinestones, Baby!
- Gelatin Printing from Your Backyard
Plus I'm working on some work-at-your-own-pace online classes which include:
- An epic stencil design class for ScanNCut (both DX and ScanNCut 2 — I've filmed every single video twice, once on each machine). That's in the editing phase. It will probably take me about a month to finish it up. Plus I've got photography to do, so maybe a bit longer. (If you think online classes are easy to create, think again. They represent hours and hours and hours of work.)
- A super cool companion class for this year's #CarveDecember challenge. I'm about half way filmed, but not at all edited, so…it's going to be a while.
- A year long gelatin printing odyssey broken into 12 individual classes for 2021. This one is in the planning stages still, but I've almost got the first few lessons completely mapped out. As long as I get the #CarveDecember class done, then the gelatin printing odyssey will begin on time!
I'd like to make some work-at-your-own pace ScanNCut classes, but motherhood is slowing me down a bit. I suppose it's a good thing. After all, all work and no play makes Julie a very dull girl. 😉
I'm in the midst of a good book. It's called "The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend."
This is definitely a book for bibliophiles. Every time I pick it up, I find myself fully engrossed in the world Katarina Bivald has created and laughing at all her nods to those who love to read. I've only just started reading it, but I can already tell that I'm going to be sad when it's over. Good thing I'm reading it in 10 minute bursts.
How is the baby?
He is eight-months-old and taking some teeny tiny wobbly baby steps with some help from Mom and Dad (you can watch a video HERE). He has the sweetest temperament and I feel both exhausted and gleefully lucky most days. Check out that cheeky little smirk:
This month, both Steve and I have had the opportunity to solo parent while the other person was out-of-town. I've had to go on two business trips and Steve had to go to a funeral. This has also meant that we've been on voluntary quarantine for all of July. I'm really looking forward to seeing my Mom and the rest of my family in a few weeks when we emerge from isolation.
Current art crush?
Jonathan W Gemmell (@artbymejwg), an Australian painter. I started following him this week and I'm already obsessed with his work. In fact, I'm so new to his work that I didn't realize he was a "he" until I sat down to write this post and went looking for his real name. Take a peek at his work (these images are embedded from instagram – if you can't see them click HERE):
They remind me of how Yayoi Kusama has been influenced by Aboriginal Dot Art.
So, there you have it! That's the scoop on life around here at the moment. If you're a member, July's vlog is on its way to the online classroom! Among other things, I take you with me on my first pandemic plane ride. I should have it up in the next day or two!
Thanks for stopping by!

Love the 2 of you, so happy!
Thanks for the head’s up on Aboriginal art. I have a friend who paints in that style.
I’m having a problem logging in to 30 Days in Your Art Journal. I think my login is so old it doesn’t work! Please will you look into it?
Thanks,
Trece

I walked at 9 months. I believe that is too soon for the bones (personal experience). He does look cute practicing and how quickly he learns.

That little guy is one cute dude, Julie! Just wait until he really gets moving!
A question about your live online class. If you can’t take it when it’s live, will it be available in recorded form? I realize the opportunity for interaction with you is gone but the content would still be there which would be far better than missing it completely. Thanks!

If you like this guy’s work (who by the way is not far from where I live), then you should look up John Olsen – an Australian artist who I think would have had a major influence on him. Olsen is an Aussie icon and is in his nineties, but still going strong. I would really love to do your year long gelli printing thing!

That little baby boy face is adorable. That smile is going to charm/disarm every one he meets in life!
I’m loving looking at the works of artbymejwg. Thanks for sharing. I really love also the work of Yayoi Kusama, there is a wonderful documentary of her life and art, I think it was on PBS. Rather sad story of her childhood, but the art spirit in her persisted.
