from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

As you know, I love a black page.  Typically I keep the artwork and text white, but I decided to branch out on this one:

1-BlackNeonPage-wm
The journaling was done with Moonlight Pens.  On the left, I did create a doodle with a white pen:

On the right side is an image I cut out of a magazine and then embellished with a white pen:

The next two pages feature no journaling, just artwork.  That used to be unusual for me.  I used to almost never have a page without journaling.  But things change and evolve and I'm okay with that.

I feel like the first portrait is in a slightly new style (for me) and the second portrait is classic Julie-style.  Do you agree or disagree?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Yes, Your faces in general have evolved and taken different directions, yet more interesting. Love your freehand doodles! Reminds me of a stamp you would carve.

  • I do agree, and it was funny before I saw the question, I was “that’s different” then scrolled … “ahhh, that’s J”!! LOL.
AND … I would give ANYTHING if any of my moonlight/plain/glittery Gelly Pens worked on paint. They just don’t, then they clog, then I have a pen with all this yummy ink and I get nothing/notta :(. I have contacted the company and their comment “use only on plain papers” UGH, and yet I see spreads like this and I have to ask “what am I doing wrong???”
SO … if there is ANYONE out there in Julie-land who could offer this old girl some suggestions, advice … bring it 🙂 … I would be over the moon if I knew the secret.
I literally have over 50 Gelly Roll … helllllp! And HNY

  • Evolution is a good thing and your portraiture skills are evolving. Your new style is more refined and I like it.

  • Hi Julie, I really like the doodle. And, interestingly it looks sort of Peruvian as does the magazine image so they seem to go together!
As for the portrait, yes the first is the ‘softest’ one of yours that I’ve ever seen. She looks pensive, where I usually see strong emotions in your other portraits. Maybe it’s the influence of Motherhood? Happy New year!
