from the Balzer Designs Blog: Adventures in Arting Podcast

On today's podcast I'm talking about two big life changes through the lens of art: moving into a new house and having a baby.

We spend a lot of time on the podcast talking about the gallery wall I'm in the midst of creating in my staircase.  Here are two photos of it coming along slowly:

It's still a work-in-progress, but that's one of the beautiful things about a gallery wall.  It can evolve.

Here are a couple of photos of the powder room I was talking about:

And finally — as discussed on the podcast — here is a photo of one of the eaves in my studio — packed with stuff:

Oh, and in case you ever wondered why we don't film the podcasts, I'm usually in my pajamas looking like this:

  • Julie, Thanks so much for the wonderful podcast. I really appreciated your perspective on the gallery wall and your studio being unique to the individual. Social media is great sometimes but the number of opinions/visuals you can find on a studio , or any art or craft project can be overwhelming . It definitely messes with my head. I’m finding when it comes to my creativity, whether it be in my creative space or with my art, crafts or sewing; I’m trying to separate inspiration from the feeling that I have to do things in a specific way. A lot of that is just having confidence in my decisions. I love that you’re so in tune with who you are as an artist. I’m still searching for that, and need to rely more on my instincts than outside influences.
In regards to the baby and your art. It will not be as you plan or expect. There are so many facets of your being that will change once the baby comes. But it will be amazing!! And your heart will open up like you could never imagine. Best wishes!!

  • I like the idea of a stairway gallery. I may have to do that in my new home!

  • Our children are often our greatest creations. Your observations of and contributions to your child’s intellect, personality, creativity, growth etc will be nothing short of awe inspiring. The rewards of good parenting are measured on a purely subjective scale. When retrospection comes, as it will, you will have your own take on the value of motherhood and childhood.
