A few weeks ago I attended a one-day quilting retreat with the Cambridge Modern Quilt Guild. It was just a few days after we moved, so I actually packed my bag for the retreat before we even moved! And it was a good call because I never would have found all my stuff in time to pack. That said, I kept it simple. I pretty much packed a sewing machine, a rotary cutter, some rulers, and a big bag of fabric scraps.
In the days leading up to the retreat, I thought about what I wanted to make with that big bag of scraps and I decided that I would work on a quilt that featured improv curves. I wanted to put some of my curved sewing skills to the test. These are the blocks I came home with:
I rearranged them a few times:
I definitely still have some rearranging that needs to be done. And I'm debating putting some strips in between some of the blocks and possibly going back into some of the blocks to add more variety. Going to mull it over for a few days…..
Thanks for stopping by!

Julie – I don’t usually offer suggestions or comments because I don’t fine myself open to them on my own work much…but – this is really shouting to me and I thought I would drop my thoughts to you since you are still in the design editing process here… the white pieces are really acting out on their own to my eye – some moments for good some for not so good – you could try collecting them to one “touch point” for another look- doing something with them you don’t do to the other fabrics – stamp or paint or embroider on them like they are their own element – which they are – this really caught my eye when I saw it in your studio earlier – so glad you got your magnificent design walls working and can play around with things there. Love your process.

That moveable wall is such a fantastic tool that you will be using over and over again for years to come.I’ve only done patterened quilts and have never used a design wall. It’s amazing to see how arranging these blocks changes the entire feel of the quilt. I’ll be following to see how this quilt progresses.

I like the last arrangement. What great walls to play with. Almost like a gallery wall. Very cool!
