Guild Challenge: Black & White Improv Blocks with a Splash of Color

This month, the Cambridge Modern Quilt Guild's lottery block is an interesting one:

The block is an Improv Block in Kona White, Kona Black, and one accent print or solid fabric used lightly (not more than 20% of the block).

The unfinished block size is 11 inches (10.5 inches finished).

Please use whatever improv style you like.

In case you're not a quilter, some explanations:

  • Lottery Blocks are something that many quilt guilds do.  In essentials, there is a "block of the month."  Everyone in the guild who wants to, makes 1 (or more) copies of that block.  Entrants receive a ticket for every block they bring in.  The blocks are then raffled off and one winner takes them all home.  They now have enough blocks to make a big quilt!
  • Kona is a brand of fabric.  They are solid color fabrics and many Modern Quilters consider them to be the "only" solids.
  • Improv piecing is a method of creating a block without a pattern.  Some quilters refuse to even use a ruler when improv piecing.

This is the first block that I made:

Complicated-wm
I looked at it and decided that I had overly complicated the situation.

So then I made these two blocks in half the time it took me to make just the first one!

Triangle-wm
Triangle-wm
Not only were they quicker to make than the first one, but I like them A LOT more too!  In fact, I can imagine both of these compositions being translated into much larger work.

Something I learned during my two weeks with Nancy Crow, was to create fabric "sketches."  It's a lesson that I had actually forgotten until I made these blocks and suddenly thought: I'd like to see that on a larger scale.  Something to think about for a future project!

Thanks for stopping by!
