Two Black and White Paintings

On Friday I talked about wanting to try painting in black and white.  And so I did!

Here are the two pieces I made:

Bw1-wm

Working in black and white was really intimidating at first.  I tend to use extremes of color — bright white and deep dark black.  I'm not a mid-tone person.  But, once I stopped fighting it, I really started to get into the subtlety of tone.  I used black and white paint (and mixed them together) along with black and white pens and markers and pencils.

I think the first piece is somewhat more successful than the bottom piece, but I learned a lot in the process of making them.  I'm think I'm going to keep experimenting with this idea for a while.  It feels like exercise.  I like that.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I also like the second painting. It makes me think of a European city landscape.

  • I just love the second painting. I think there might be a bit more contrast, and I always love contrast! I worked in B&W photography for a lot of years, and always seemed to pump up the contrast in printing. I am challenged by your challenge to try working in B&W myself. It’s been years since I did much photography. Now mostly working in mixed media.

  • The first one made me think of a graveyard. Sorry, but it does. The second looks like a view in a fisheye lens or that idea. That dimension added with the oval and the shadowing makes it my choice. It also as another mentioned brings to mind a building. I want to look into those windows.
