I took a class this past weekend.  The instructor had us do an exercise that focused on speed.  When we were done she said, "Even if you don't like it, what have you lost?  5 minutes?!"  The woman in front of me turned to her friend and said, "And wasted your fabric."

That comment hit me like a silver bullet.

I am an unabashed hoarder.  I get how hard it is to let go of supplies you paid lots of money for…
…or love dearly…
…or are one-of-a-kind…
…or you don't feel you're "good enough" to use yet.

But what good are they doing you on a shelf?  In a drawer?  Safely tucked away?

In fact, they may be doing you a disservice.  Supplies may be filling your art space, expanding beyond your organizational system, or even overwhelming you to the point of stopping you from creating.

It's time to use what you've got and winnow down that stash!

Remember, the only time that paint is wasted is when it's in the tube.  The only time that fabric is wasted is when it's shoved in a drawer.  I would argue that most of us are wasting our expensive supplies every single day by not using them.  Not to be macabre, but my quilt guild has recently accepted several donations of supplies from members who have passed away.  I don't want to die with a room full of unused supplies.

I put together a list of five things you can do to use your supplies.

Five Solutions for Using Your Supplies:

  1. Make art.  Don't wait for the right time.  Grab ten minutes and play!
  2. Create art kits.  Include the items you've been hoarding.  Force yourself to use the art kits to create.
  3. Donate or sell what you're not going to use.  There's no use in hanging on to things you rarely use.  Pass them on to someone who will use them right away!
  4. Develop a 1-in/2-out rule.  For every one new art item you bring into your home, two items have to be disposed of — either because they're used up or because you're sending them off to a happy new home.  You'll be amazed at how willing you are to use things up when you know it means new things can come into your home!
  5. Change your mindset.  This is probably the most difficult thing to do.  But you can do it.  Start looking at shelves packed with unused supplies as a waste.  Focus on how wasteful it is to not use the things you own.

If you'd like, you can print out this little reminder I made for you and post it in your art space:

I'd love to know your thoughts on wasting supplies!  Thanks for stopping by!

  • Something I hear often from people is they’re afraid to use their supplies because they’re novices in a technique and don’t want to waste expensive supplies. They’ve forgotten that learning has value. Even if they make something that’s not very good, they haven’t wasted the supplies because they’ve learnt something.
I use other people’s discarded supplies and tools almost exclusively as part of my art makjng philosophy. I never worry about using something up or ‘wasting’ it when learning a new yechnique because I rarely paid much for it.

  • Oh my, my, my……You hit the nail on the head !! My biggest fault is buying things and thinking they’re not worthy of me to use them — too expensive, too pretty, etc etc.
Basically I don’t have the confidence to just open and create with them !!
Thanks for the nudge !!! I’m heading into my studio after my morning coffee……

  • The last couple of years in my studio, I’ve sold off tools I will never use again, throw out collage papers, and cut up old paintings.
I’m doing my best to Use Up Before Buying. It’s scary…like I have little to no white sheets, BUT I have 40 sheets with paint on one side! Use Up!
Slowly, I’ve been turning around my scarcity mindset to one of abundance. I have an abundance of art supplies and paintings: Use Up.
Thank you for the reminder! Use Up!

  • After moving houses two times in the past 5 years (to smaller homes!) it has become pretty easy to get rid of ‘supplies’… I just don’t have the space to hold on to all those things I don’t use. I gave away a lot of stuff that I hardly/not used and am happy creating with the stuff I kept… You are so right: it’s a waste to ‘just have it’ and do nothing with it.

  • Oh my, this is me! I am mindfully working on using and making and playing, with a side of giving away. It’s not part of my auto-pilot yet, and I feel less than brave with some materials, but I’m getting there. I tend to border on collector rather than maker at times.

  • I am also a hoarder and get quite anxious at the thought of using my supplies. I feel so overwhelmed by not only supplies but piles and piles of artwork from my art school studies. I partly feel I have no purpose to create without a school deadline. These are some of the factors getting in my way of creating. I’ve made a start in the last few weeks to organise my space but I have such along way to go. Thanks Julie for the motivating words. I get so stuck in regret about the money I spend on things I don’t use and the thought of giving them away is also hard but all this clutter is like a noose around my neck. Thankyou.

  • Thank you so much for your great article. The paragraph mentioning that too many supplies can affect the organization of the room and can stop creativity really hit home. I feel motivated now to do what must be done.

  • You’re so right. What a timely reminder. I’ve actually just been sorting through and selling my supplies and found that I have tons more than I’ll ever need. I’ve also found duplicate supplies so those have to go. My interests have also turned away from painting and working with fabric to working with resin and card making. I do occasionally return to old interests or incorporate them in my new interests such as using fabric when making cards or mixing paint with resin but I need so much less than I have. I think that besides culling my supplies I also need to use what I have before purchasing more. I’m spending more time organizing than creating and that’s never good. Great article Julie.

  • Great post Julie! Last week I went through my scrap bin. These are fabric pieces that I felt didn’t deserve to be on the shelf or too small etc. I found some gems in there – pieces years ago I hated and now absolutely love! Anyway, I am making a little fabric book of those I want to keep. The others will be cut up for use in another project or given to a friend who loves to use my scraps. As for supplies, I have several that I will be giving away so someone else can have some fun. Thanks for the article.

Anyway, I am making a little fabric book of those I want to keep. The others will be cut up for use in another project or given to a friend who loves to use my scraps. As for supplies, I have several that I will be giving away so someone else can have some fun. Thanks for the article.

  • I printed out your artistic reminder. For me, it is not only a reminder of art supplies but also clothes. What am I saving my nice shirts/skirts/pants for???? I made the decision recently changing my limited thinking of scarcity to abundance thanks to Deepak Chopra’s meditations, and I realize that I may die and not have worn these things I love so much and do not want them to wear out. Same for paint supplies, precious papers, etc.A great reminder and post. Thanks for sharing!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all. So grateful for all that you have offered us over the years Julie!!

  • This is exactly what I have been practicing and the advice I gave someone the other day when they commented on one of my Instagram posts telling me they were “collecting” supplies to someday make cards with once she’s as skilled as all the people she follows. If we don’t use what we have hoarded we’ll never gain those skills to become the artist we desire to be. I’ve been creating for over 20 year and only in the last few years have I been repeating to myself “it’s only paper” and pushing forward. Great article Julie!

  • Thanks Julie!!! I have “collected” to the point of paralyzing myself. I spend more time organizing my supplies than I do creating. I haven’t done any creating for about a year due to not wanting to sift through the piles. I really appreciate your suggestions!

  • Julie, thanks for the Whoa moment. As I look around my two craft areas, I realize I spend most of my time, cleaning and organizing and not art making.
I love my pretty little things but not using them is like having a muscle atrophy! I’m imagining my self as an art supply sitting on the shelf day after day. After days and months of non use, I can’t get up! The paint has dried up and I can’t use it because it sat year after year on the shelf.
New Year resolution. 1- in, 2- out. Thank you for that.

Every project I see I want to do. I have to start factoring in that there are only 24 hours in a day! Thanks for this reminder to do a better job of using what I already have.

  • Thank you for this post, Julie! You are bang on. I am a hoarder myself and unfortunately I continue to buy more and more art supplies. I like your idea of letting two things go for every one I purchase! Made me think! Love the article!

  • Julie, Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for this wonderful post. My thought in the past few months has been ,
“When I pass away, someone is going to have to get rid of all my art supplies.” I have challenged myself to be more creative with my supplies. Actually, it’s been fun and relaxing. I have been making little surprise boxes for some of my crafting friends and sending RAK boxes.

  • Julie, I really needed to hear your message. Not only am I a hoarder of supplies, I have no more space to store my recent purchases, and I can not get to crafting the way my craft room is now. Thank you for the reminder why I started creating in the first place. Happy Holidays.

  • Thanks Julie, I know you were talking to me! I feel just like all of the other commenters. I would have to live 3 lives to use up all my stuff. Time to let go! Happy Thanksgiving

  • A very interesting post and comments. I thought I was the only one! I am overwhelmed, frozen, and have lost all confidence to try. When I didn’t know all “the stuff I was suppose to have, all the perfect, award winning quilts I was to try to master, meant to purchase every new book, tool, a designer studio, follow every quilt blogger, youtube, join every class, I was a happy person, content, looked forward to playing, creating, learning. I did a disservice to myself. I allowed others to show me I was not good, not talented, not perfect and I froze. Yes, the fabric, the tools, the books, are overwhelming and I haven’t produced anything. It is all there. I have been to those estate sales. I am reading this post AGAIN. Not sure I can break this negative challenge at this stage in my life.

  • Guilty! It took a kid looking around my craft room and saying “this reminds me of that hoarder show” to convince me to quit purchasing more and use what I have! (insert embarrassed face here)

  • Oh man! This is perfect. I’ve got yarn and fabric I’ve been hanging onto for years. We’ve decided to move next year, so I’ve begun the cleanup and will be donating a lot of it! Thanks for the encouragement!
