MFA Boston: Art in Bloom 2018

Like many art museums, The Boston MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) hosts an annual botanical event called, "Art in Bloom."  Throughout the museum, florists, floral artists, and garden clubs create floral arrangements inspired by a particular work of art in the museum.  The two are displayed together and it's an experience that is both visually interesting and intellectually stimulating — much discussion ensues about whether or not a particular arrangement "works" for the viewer.

Personally, I love this event!  I think there are three reasons why:

  1. Because it makes me look at the art differently.  The floral arrangements really force me to think about the works of art — and stop to look at them for some time.
  2. Because translating existing art into artistic inspiration is something I do all the time!  I love evaluating other people's efforts — what do I like, what would I do differently, etc.
  3. So many people come out to the museum to see the flowers!  It's fabulous to see the MFA crowded with folks of all ages and talking about the art!!

Do you have a local museum that does something similar?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Our local museum, Montclair Art Museum in NJ, does this every other year. It’s so amazing how the florists interpret the works of art. They also design the stands to be one with the arrangements.
As you said it is so good to see a different view of the art, opens up the eyes.

  • I wish our local MOA did this. It’s such a great idea and it brings a new perspective to the art. A friend of mine has lunch with the director of our MOA often; I’ve given her a link to this post. (No subtle hint there. lol)
