Well, the inevitable happened.  I missed a day.

And so I tweeted twice the next day to make up for it.

But then I missed another day.

And I didn't realize it until I wrote this blog post.

But I survived.

And I decided to keep going.

But I still feel a little bit guilty about it — like I ruined the whole project.  But, did I?

As I mentioned before, I'm doing The 100 Day Project.  The conceit behind the project is simple: one action every day for 100 days.  My action is #100daysofArtTweets.  I'm posting original art content to twitter every day for 100 days.

Here are days 20-35:

Observations:

  • I have been vacillating back and forth between, "I ruined it!" and "It's fine!" So, here is the big meta question: Do you have to complete 100 days of the task you set out for The 100 Day Project?  Or is the project more about setting a big goal and keeping at it over a sustained period of time?  I don't know the answer.  I'm still processing.  I'd love to know your opinion.
  • I really like having a place to share thoughts and photos and videos and links that is (a) less curated than instagram, and (b) less well thought out than my blog.  I never really saw the use for twitter, but now I feel like I'm starting to get it.
  • I have the fewest number of followers of any social media platform on twitter.  It feels weird to debut "exclusive" content there, where a video might only get 100 views.
  • Speaking of social media numbers, I haven't noticed an uptick in followers.  It's not why I started this project, but I assumed it would be a side effect.  It's both fascinating/disheartening to realize that putting no effort into twitter and putting lots of effort into twitter results in the exact same thing.  I'll reserve final judgment until day 100.
  • I'm still mostly sharing a photo a day.  I guess that's what I like when other people post, so I'm doing it.  I might try a week of text only and see how that goes.
  • I've noticed that I tend to wait to post until late in the day because I want the tweet to be "the best possible."  That seems silly.  I want to try to just post the first art related thing that comes into my head each day!  Even though I'm thinking of twitter as less curated, it feels like I'm still trying to curate it.  I need to let go of control! Noooo!
  • I'm finding the "have to post every day" interesting.  It's forcing me to focus on what I do each day that is both tweet-worthy and artistic!

Looking forward to seeing what's next in this project!  Thanks for stopping by!

  • 100 days are 100 days they don’t have to be consecutive. Don’t be too hard on yourself. We all have Dyas..dyas..days that get screwed up!

  • I’ve found that *when* you tweet matters. If you tweet at a time most of your followers aren’t looking at twitter, your stuff gets buried in the hundreds of tweets they have to catch up on when they get back online. Also, I don’t know how much you reply to other art-people’s tweets, but that’s a good way to expand your followers. Just tweeting your own stuff isn’t so effective on twitter.

  • I have been working on a 100mandals project for a few years. Almost 2 years ago I was in the 60’s or 70s but we moved and I totally lost track of what number I was on. Now I have started over and I’m over 50, but I have started working really big so I’m cutting myself some slack. That said, I do want to do a 100 day challenge in 100 days at some point. Love the article about the museums in NYC!

  • Well, it does seem like there is much more in life to worry about. And we already know that we cannot be perfect and that life is not perfect, so I think there really are no issues here. March onward! Oh, as I tell my grown boys, ‘Never Ever Give Up, Ever’. Sort of a motto, if you will. I think I see this motto in action with you too.

    option 3: nearly 100
i used to be a 1 or fail. i skipped right past 2 and am a very happy 3!

  • I did a 100 days of art journaling project. Sometimes other parts of my life got in the way and I stressed myself out trying to get something on a page before I went to bed. When I learned to just let it go if it didn’t get done before I went to bed, I felt so much better. If I missed a day, I wasn’t going to die or have some horrible thing befall me. Life would go on. I just enjoyed the process and learned as I went.
Also, did you ever consider perhaps 100 days of art tweets wasn’t so much about doing the art and tweeting it as much as it was a learning process about twitter itself? Keep sharing your tweets on the blog as I love to follow along that way.

  • Yep, I’m all in with this idea!
This was my idea this time around (copied from my IG @leafandfrond, cause why re-invent the wheel!):
For this round of the #100dayproject I’m doing 100 small, botanically-themed mixed media works in 100 days under #100botanics . I’m keeping it flexible because I know I’ll only be able to work in bursts – with this description I feel okay doing 5 projects in a day and then nothing for 5 days as I’ll still be on track for 100 things in 100 days. A little playing with semantics there, but that’s how I’m making it work for me. I kept the description deliberately general so I can do a lot of different things under the one umbrella, with a lot or little effort depending on how it’s going. And I’m not pressuring myself to post every day; I’ll make photo collages and share a bunch every few days (or whenever I have a burst of creativity).
So from your options, I’m trying to do option 2, but if it turns out to be option 3 then I’m okay with that (and excited to have produced SOME art pieces).

  • Does a 100 day project have to be consecutive days? Couldn’t you just do 100 days and not worry about missing a few days? Just add the missed days on at the end? Anyway, I think you’re doing great. Well done.

  • I think “catching up” by slotting in extra posts on another day is fine, as is continuing past the “deadline,” or having it be the 100ish Days project. 🙂 With all your many activities and work commitments and travel — it boggles the mind how you have been so consistent!
Everyone uses Twitter differently; especially in the past year I find I’m following more and more news sites there. I follow way too many people to have a prayer of seeing all the good stuff, especially if you factor in a desire to also check FB and Instagram. I appreciate the round-up post here; I’ve emailed myself the link to check out all the videos over the weekend.
I’ve not joined in with the 100 Days project myself because I know it is too long of a commitment and I tend to be a teeny bit OCD and feel like a failure if I miss a day. That’s just not fun to me when my hobby feels like work.

  • I agree with others that the 100 days doesn’t need to be consecutive. I also think the content doesn’t have to be exclusive to Twitter. A link to your vlog or blog entries would be OK with me…your whole life is about art, so just about anything you could possibly Tweet would be art-related 🙂

  • I really like & agree 100% with Janet’s thoughtful reply. I am in such awe with how much “art is in your life” therefor it is also in mine. I absolutely love your blog & even thogh I have a twitter account & follow artists’ on there yours is the one that has that “something different” feeling, truly. To me it is amazing to see the diversity of the art in your life. I am so very grateful for that “spirit” with which you put into your life of art & all that you “share & teach” others.
