"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." (Saint Augustine)
Today I'm sharing some more photos from our trip to Spain. I believe that an enormous part of being an artist, for me, is being exposed to different cultures, different approaches, and different ways of living in the world. Sometimes you are lucky enough to go around the world to absorb all that different, and thanks to the internet, we can all catch a glimpse! I hope you enjoy these photos! Come and take a peek through my eyes:
How are these photos useful to you? Four ideas for you:
ONE: Use the colors you see. There's a FREE online color palette generator you can use to turn any photo into a five color palette:
TWO: Paint what you see. I often paint and sketch from photos. Because the photo has already flattened the object, it's easier than drawing from real life (plus nothing moves).
I think this photo…
…would make an amazing painting. Especially in watercolor where the people were really loosely done. I messed around with some Photoshop filters to check my hunch and look how cool it turned out:
THREE: Steal the patterns! I snap photos of interesting patterns everywhere I go. Just be sure you reinterpret them!
FOUR: Steal the composition. Sometimes when I really love a photo, I realize it's because the composition is just so good.
I would turn this sketch on its side and it could easily become a painting! Just color in the shapes! In fact, I did that in Photoshop and in about 5 minutes, I had this digital sketch:
A quick and easy study for a larger "real life" painting.
I hope you feel inspired! Thanks for stopping by!

Such inspiration of color, pattern and texture. I recently returned from a too short trip to Cuba. You would love the art of Jose Fuster. In the small town of Jaimanitas outside of Havana, he has tiled over 80 homes with mosaics. The area is called Fusterlandia. It’s an amazing delight for the eyes. I keep looing at all my photos for inspiration, even the flooring of the Miami airport will be used for stamp carving. I don’t think I will wait until carve December to begin carving.
Thans for the link to the app that will pick colors from a photo. I think I’ll be using that on this rainy morning.

What a great idea and ways to see things, the color and how to break down a composition from a photo. Thank you for simplifying what I have found to be so complicated. Awesome!! thank you!!!! Loved the tip you shared on your livestream regarding moonlight and gel pens. I wondered what made them stop working even when filled with color. Thank you for all that you bring to teaching your audience!

Love the photos. So much inspiration. I’ve been editing my photos for paintings in photoshop and trying to paint them. I find I’m learning so much by doing that.

I’m fascinated by the wonderful tile patterns that come from just having a design in opposite corners, then grouping the tiles. Kind of reminds me of your tv segment on using photo corners to make medallions. I also like the idea of using Photoshop filters to turn a photo into a painting.
You take pictures of the same things I do: floors, doors, and long, narrow perspectives. 🙂
