If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek. Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.
I love that people in the world are interested in learning how I art journal. BUT, I think it's really important for each and every artist to find their own personal journal style. With that thought in mind, here are 5 tips for finding your art journaling style:
ONE: Do what comes easily.
I think we all feel like it has to be "work" in order to be great. Nope. I'm not telling you to stop improving or practicing, but I think it's important to go after all the stuff that comes easily to you — colors you like, shapes you like, formats you like, etc.
I like faces. I like colors. I like stamps. I like pattern. I keep putting those things in my journal!
TWO: Don't compare yourself to others.
This is sooooo difficult. But you can do it.
There are so many journal artists whom I admire, but as soon as I start feeling jealous or down on myself, I remind myself that it's not a competition. Sometimes it means that I need to unfollow people to protect myself. That's okay.
THREE: Break the "rules."
Everyone tells you to get rid of that blank white page, but you like the white page? Great! Leave it.
Everyone tells you that you have to have writing in your art journal but you don't want to? Awesome! Don't.
Everyone tells you to gesso your pages, but you don't want to. Rock on. Leave the gesso off.
It's your book. Be you. Do you.
FOUR: Copy and improve upon yourself.
Dr. Seuss had it right when he said: "No one is you-er than you." If you're looking for an idea for inspiration or something to copy, look no further than yourself! Find a spread you love in an old journal. Find a tag you decorated or a card you made that you think is great. Be inspired by the things that you made and take them further. Make them even better! Don't look to Pinterest or Google Image Search, instead look inside your own portfolio of work. You'll grab the things that are the essence of you and make them even more you.
That's a 2013 spread that inspired a 2016 spread.
FIVE: Do it as often as possible.
You know I'm a great believer in Art Journal Every Day. Every day isn't always possible. But art journaling with some frequency is vital to finding your style.
On this spread you can see that I'm simply journaling every day with a bit of stamping mixed in. That's a very small time commitment, but after 5 days, a beautiful page is completed!
I hope you'll give these tips a try. AND if *you* have any advice on how you found your personal art journaling style, I'd love to hear it, so leave a comment!
Thanks for stopping by!

At first, I took the phrase, “find your journal.” to mean, “Where is that journal?” Actually, that is sometimes a problem amid all the piles of projects. I have several journals, as do many people, and I’ve noticed that each type: box board, mixed media, old calendar, etc., all have a different style. They’re similar, but different. For example, box board has more open color (white space), and the old calendar is built around the calendar page. As always, love your techniques and encouragement to do it my way.

OK Julie my comment is not so much tangible in its advice so here is how I broke through:
The largest barrier to making art for me was FEAR. Fear that I am not doing it right, fear from the art world’s labels of what art really is, fear that it doesn’t look like the image I am using as a reference, fear that my palette doesn’t match the teachers palette so I am doing something wrong, fear that I am wasting products, fear from the first time trying something new that it didn’t turn out so i must not be any good, fear that no one else thinks it is art and fear that I will find out that the person who told me that I was not an artist and could not be an artist at 5 years old was actually right! All of these fears were barriers to art journaling and finding my own style. NOW, that I have discovered this about myself I can embrace what I love in style, color and techniques and just chose parts from each artist that I am drawn too. WHEN I ACKNOWLEDGED AND WORKED THROUGH THIS FEAR is how and when I found my own art journaling style.

I always have a hard time with just finding the right journal to begin the process. What type of journal is good for beginners that love multi-media and that is not intimidating?

I am using an old planner of mine to try. As a newby to art journal and media I wasn’t sure on what tipe of journal to buy, so I decided to use stuff that was already at my house and see what I liked. That was great for me, worked like a charm, and now I am slowly investing on the fancy suplies we see all over the net. And, as a bonus, I wasn’t afraid of ruining an old notebook, but was afraid of paying for a journal and never use it.

I think suggestion #4 (look to yourself for inspiration) is great AND reinforces #2 (don’t compare yourself to others). Plus, it’s a great time saver. I’ve been known to go online for inspiration, only to either end up breaking tip #2 (& feeling too inferior to play) OR end up getting lost online and never end up playing. So – thank you for that suggestion….while I still might run the risk of getting lost amongst my supplies (or unfinished projects) – I think looking to yourself for inspiration is a great tip!
Now that I’m finishing up a project for some friends, I’m going to try to Art Journal Everyday for February. It’s the shortest month, so that’s GOT to be attainable!! Haha, I hope so!

Still trying to figure out what my style is but this post is very helpful. Something stuck me about #2 and that quote in #4. I definitely have found myself doubting my own artistic ability by comparing myself to some of the amazing artists I follow on Instagram. I haven’t unfollowed them but I’ve instead just kind of stopped using the app.
It’s a new year and I hope to start sharing art again and working on my art journal as much as possible and shed some of that baggage and just start creating again. Your posts have been very helpful on this journey.

A big part of me wanted to have my art journal filled w/ ‘messy’ things like watercolors, texture medium, sprays, etc. And I will still work in that journal when I want to experiment, but because I don’t have a dedicated space in the house (my supplies are in the bedroom closet and I have to work in the kitchen…), it just won’t work on an even weekly basis.
I had put together a little traveling journal w/ a bag of colored pencils, some micron pens, varying width markers in black and brown, and a white, gold, and silver marker. That’s it. I would use it when away for the weekend or when I knew I had a long wait at the doctor’s office.
Just this week, I’ve used this kit at home. I was really wanting to journal w/ art and reached for it. That’s when it I realized that this needs to be my ‘normal’ journal and save the other for when I really have time to play and experiment. For at home, I want to add a more colored pencils (larger set) but it will still be small enough that I can keep it all in a small bag and keep it by my chair in the den.
Perhaps now it won’t be months between art journal entries! …because it felt so wonderful to be able to express myself through my art journal this week.
Was great to read your hints because I feel as though I has just finished processing through very similar steps…

Very wise words. Thanks for putting them in writing. Sometimes I need to see them to take it to heart.

You have commented previously something that really helped me find my art journal style. Now I look at other art and even ads/catalogs and ask myself what do I like about this picture/image? And I try to use the color combination or shape or use of layers in my own journal. I love this idea of looking to my own work for inspiration. Thanks
