Stamp Carving

Carve December 2017: Some of my Favorites! (part 5: people & people parts)

You know that I love people — especially faces and eyes!  So, I’m wrapping up my Carve December favorites with stamps that feature people (and people parts)! Click on any image to make it bigger and to read the caption by the artist.

Why the Human Figure?

Artists are drawn to creating portraits, hands, and the human figure because people are endlessly expressive and we are wired to respond to that expressiveness. Psychologically, humans are hard-coded to read faces and bodies for emotion, intention, and connection; entire regions of the brain are devoted to facial recognition and interpreting gesture. When artists draw a hand or a face, they’re not just recording anatomy—they’re exploring identity, vulnerability, power, aging, culture, and story. The human figure becomes a mirror: a way to understand ourselves and others. There’s also the challenge factor. Hands and faces are complex, subtle, and instantly recognizable, so they push an artist’s observational skills. In that sense, making art about people satisfies both a deep emotional impulse (to connect and be understood) and a cognitive one (to solve a fascinating visual puzzle).

What I Learned

Some things I’m taking away from these blocks and prints:

  • I want to try a silhouette of a person.
  • I love the idea of carving some of my fantastical faces —  instead of a realistic one.  I have no idea why I’ve never tried that before?!
  • I love love love the notion of interchangeable sort of Mr. Potato Head-esque features for faces!
  • Eye stamps as a background pattern?!  YES!
  • Famous paintings as grayscale stamps?!  YES!
  • I carved one hand stamp this year (below).  Next year, I want to do so many more!

Final Thoughts

This is my final round-up of favorite carves from Carve December, but there are still more Carve December artist profiles to come!  So, watch for those over the next month or so!

Thanks for stopping by!
