from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

I definitely go through phases in my art journal.  A lot of times I use certain colors or certain tools because they happen to be on my desk.  I tend not to clean up my work surface until it's completely impossible to find anything or get anything done.  I'm a super messy worker!  Eeek!  Towards that end, looking at these pages, I can tell I was carving stamps for my online stamp carving class on designing patterns

How can I tell that?

Well, take a look at these pages and you'll pretty quickly see how:

Yep.  That left side page is pretty much covered in hand carved stamps.  And I looooooove the way they look all stamped together.  (Remember when I said yesterday that printing was 70% of the art to me?!)

The right side is one of my hand cut lace pages.  You can watch a video on how to make your own page like this here.

You can see the back side of that lace page along with another page featuring stamping.

The large white design is a Balzer Designs stencil.  The tag features a hand carved stamp I designed for class.  A lot of people ask me what I do with my stamped tags.  Well, here's your answer!  🙂

This next page looks like it features two faces…

3-BadassinCharge-wm
…but it's actually two separate pages!

Do you see how the nose is taped on (red tape)?  Well, this is another example of a messy desk.  That nose shape was a mask I used when monoprinting.  I found it sitting on my desk and taped it into my journal and the rest of the face sort up sprung up around it.

Looking at it, you'd never guess that the entire face was based around that nose!

You can see the evidence of more stamp play in these next two detail photos:

I think a messy desk is actually helpful to my artistic process.  I like that my journal reflects what's going on in my life — not just because of the text, but also because of the supplies I use on the pages.  I can usually open up any page in my journal and look at the art supplies being used and tell you what other projects I must have been working on at the time!  I think it's proof that my art journal is simply an extension of me at the moment.

What do you think?  Are you a messy desk creator?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Oh, Yes! I find it a way to pushing myself to use that products out on my work surfaces in different ways. And I have found if the counters are all neat and ‘pretty’ I do not want to mess them up….so there is always several things laying or scattered across the table to tempt me into working more………for me art begins in chaos…..

  • Love it! Since I have such a small space, my desk is always messy, no matter how many times I put away things when I am done. It is not possible to be neat when you have papers, brushes, stamps, paints, stencils, etc in a pint sized space like a small closet ;+) . Love your journals and stamps.
