Stamp Carving

#CarveDecember 2017: Stamps 1 – 6

In the mess of everything that was happening for me personally, I wasn't sure if I could/would do #CarveDecember.  I was leaning towards "no way" and then there were so many posts on instagram from people talking about how excited they were to start #CarveDecember….

I read and re-read the enthusiasm and excitement in those posts.

I decided that I would do it, but take it verrrrry easy with super simple stamps.

I also decided that I wanted to do some extra giving while I was hurting.  It seemed like doing something nice for others was a way to make the world a brighter place, even if it was a small gesture.  And so I determined that every single #CarveDecember post on instagram would contain some kind of helpful information about stamp carving.  Some small tips and some big ones.  I've also been sharing time lapse videos of the carving and printing process.  You can see all of that on my instagram feed.

Here are stamps #1-6.  I created a series of stamps that work together:

1-wm
1-wm
1-wm
1-wm
1-wm
1-wm
Thus far, it has been another enjoyable December of carving.  I think my stamps are simpler this year, but I don't think they're any less impactful.  And the carving has been good artistic soup for my soul.  I'll be back next week with lots more hand carved stamps!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. It's never too late to join into #CarveDecember.  Just carve a stamp, post it to instagram and use the #CarveDecember hashtag!  Easy peasey!  And don't forget, you have until December 31 to take advantage of this coupon: take 31% (because there are 31 stamps in #CarveDecember) off any of my online stamp carving classes using the code 31STAMPS.

  • You are correct, Julie: simpler stamps do NOT make them less impactful!
Thank you for doing this – and sharing when you can.
Many of us don’t comment often – but we are always cheering for you.

  • Love your stamps and I’m going to try one of your classes on stamp carving. You inspire me to try something new. Also, I absolutely love what you are doing on Make It Artsy.

  • I am not aware of missing any posts but if you shared what the source of your pain was I did miss that.
This can be a hard time of year for folks under the very best of circumstances, but doing art, sharing with those who love and support you is most assuredly a step in the right direction. Whatever it is, it too shall pass. ..

  • I am ashamed to say I am 20 days behind–but I got some real inspiration last night. At my book arts group meeting the show-and-tell included a set of at least a hundred square Magic Rub eraser stamps. each carved with a design that could be used to make a pattern when stamped, turned 90 degrees, and stamped again–three more times. It was an amazing collection, done for an MFA degree in printmaking. The proud new owner (and what a splendid present!) had used the stamps to make wonderful collage papers–he used alcohol inks on deli paper for a background, and stamped the patterns with Staz-on when the ink dried. This made gorgeous papers! Can’t wait to try it myself!

  • Hi Julie,
I love all the tags you make with your stamps. What do you do with them when you’re finished making them?
    Thanks,
