I wanted to share a very simple piece I did recently using acrylic paint, spray paint, a stencil, and some oil pastels:
It's kind of a commission — a piece that was made specifically for this room.
It needed to be large and simple and black and white and inoffensive because it was installed as a "staging" piece — i.e. a piece of art to help sell the home.
I can't decide whether it's a finished painting or not. At the time, I felt that it was done. But, looking at these photos, I'm wondering: Is it a finished painting or is it a background? Sometimes I think it's done and sometimes I think it's not.
Knowing when a painting is done is one of the most difficult things. For me, it's a feeling. However, time sometimes changes my feelings.
I'm going to have to think about this one….
Thanks for stopping by!

Whoa, my brain just came up with a black and white journal page while watching an Anthony Bourdain piece on Jeremiah Tower. So far, it is much starker than what you have, so I’d say yours is finished, but…

I like it because it is somehow less complicated visually yet rich. It seems to lack a focal point perhaps, Which could be inferred (from a construction point) rather than overly obvious, to keep with the theme of the painting. But that is just a thought not a necessity. Perhaps somewhat larger words in the right bottom area… two words… some words to think on…

This has depth and intrigue, and I would definitely call it done. Very striking.

Yes, it’s done. It looks just like the very abstract art hanging in an office I go to that was remodeled. It’s got enough visual interest to make you want to look closer but not enough to make it jump out at you. I adore it. If you did anything at all I think it would be to put a swipe of the color of the bedspread somewhere in it.

Get rid of that bedspread and the painting will have its own voice.
The two do not work together, bedspread is too heavy.
Painting needs a pop of light.
IMO only not an artist, just a Realtor for 20 plus years.
