I have to confess that my travel schedule has made me an absent student at my painting class at the MFA Boston. Nonetheless, I feel like going sometimes is still better than not going at all.
I find the work of the other students inspiring:
Along with the work of our instructor, Bill Commerford:
I came to class with a question I'm struggling to answer: Who am I as an artist? Therefore, I'm pushing myself to try new things while being true to my own personal style.
Can you tell which of the two paintings below the underpainting above is under?
Bill suggested that I put out some of my recent work and make some observations about it as a grouping. I put out some faces and then some landscapes:
And then I put out one face and one landscape:
Oddly enough, even though they're very different, they still speak to each other and have some similarities in style and feeling.
Here's a closer look at that painting on the left:
I'm in the middle of this process of self-discovery, so I'm not sure that I have a lot of concrete things to say. But, at the moment:
- I feel that I do have a uniquely me personal style of painting.
- I'm working on putting my emotions and thoughts into my work, rather than creating aesthetically pleasing art.
- I'm focusing on process and creating work with a methodology that is both sustainable over time and adaptable to multiple situations and time constraints. I want to be a working artist for a long long time.
- I feel proud of all the work and study I've put in previous to this class. Because I have studied color and composition and drawing and art techniques, I can simply focus on finding my voice. I don't feel limited by my skills or knowledge. It's a *wonderful* feeling!
Thanks for letting me share!

Good morning Julie, I love how you always are on such a creative path in your life and knowing exactly where you are going and how to get there. Your art is amazing to me. I love your bright happy (to me anyway) colors and the uniqueness of your mark making. My favorite of all of these is the one on the left of the three paintings. It looks like “happy jungle” to me. I also love that you share your Artful life journey with us. Thank you!

I agree with Angela’s sentiments and comments. Thank you for sharing your process and your work. An education in itself and speaks to all of our struggles as artists. Thank you!!!!

I’m in a similar spot to you, Julie. Trying to find “my art”. Time is definitely an issue for me since I have a busy schedule. I know,I know. I just need to prioritize and say no more. All I can say is YOU GO, GIRL. Keep on keepin’ on.

I love all the exploration I see you doing! I can see ways in which the newer work connects to other things you’ve made, but also some new directions, as well. I’m glad you’re getting to live your life as an artist (a very busy, multitasking artist, obv.!)

This sounds like such a fabulous class. I don’t paint but feel I am missing out somehow. And emotion and thought – and intellect is, for me at least, what makes art rather then just craft. I am still in the craft arena. You’re very much moving over to the art arena. Love it!
