This is a painting with one piece of collage. So, technically it's a mixed media collage. But mostly, it's a mixed media painting (acrylic, charcoal, and marker).
I love how the background is enveloping her. She is both separate and a part of it.
Here is the one piece of collage:
And some of the other details:
I used slightly more realistic "skin tone" colors than I usually do.
Though, I still allowed bits of the colorful underpainting to show through.
It's also a slightly more realistic eye than I normally go for.
I usually paint the edges of my canvases black, but this one felt like it wanted to be red:
It is at once both different from what I normally paint, and a natural extension of the work that I make. I'm really enjoying the play of acrylic with charcoal, though I need to find a solution for really "setting" the charcoal a bit more. Anybody have a fixative that they love and that isn't insanely toxic? I'd love to know!
Thanks for stopping by!

I love the softer, more feminine quality of your faces. A new period for faces, a new mood perhaps. Lovely!

Julie, I have to first say, you are an inspiration to everyone. So creative. You are a natural on tv. Second… I’ve been looking for a fixative for years that won’t blow up the house. I searched for a while one day and found “SpectraFix”. I used it on a pastel/chalk…didn’t think it would work…but it did. I was, like, WOW!!! Found it several places, but got it from Dick Blick (just love when it comes to the door). There is NO odor, comes in a spritz-type bottle. Says it is for pastel, chalk, pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, colored pencils. Good on almost every surface. Price wise it wasn’t much more than an aerosol type. And I don’t have to open all the windows and doors, or turn off the furnace. Bonus: made in the US, all natural. I’m like, gobsmacked!!! Website is SpectraFix.com. Hope this helps you, as much as you have helped me over the last few years. You go girl!!!

I teach a small local community art journal class for seniors and I have used your work as an example of where they can get inspiration.

I was going to mention spectra fix also. I noticed someone else mentioned it. It’s a pump bottle, doesn’t smell bad and works great,

This is my favorite face that you’ve done. I love your work it motivates me to work and stretch. I’m stuck right now in mixed media so I’m quilting instead and will get back to it now that we’re getting close to the holidays.
