Quilting

Is it a Quilt? Collage? Neither?

Back in June, my local quilt guild, Quilters Connection, held their annual quilt show.  I was thrilled and delighted to discover that my owl quilt had made it onto the official quilt show tote bag!

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Is it a Quilt?

The guild voted and my little cutie was one of the ones that got chosen.  Yay!

I entered two quilts in the show. One was an older one, which you can see in this 2009 blog post, and the other one was something I made in June that I'm not 100% sure counts as a quilt.

It is fabric.

There is stitching

There are layers.

There are stitched layers.

BUT….

It's not really a quilt in the traditional sense.  It's more of a quilt collage.

I took a variety of small pieces and scraps and combined them into something greater — something that tells a story.

I love how it turned out!  So tactile.  So dimensional.  So interesting to look at and think about.  I think the imagery and the combination of imagery is quite evocative.

What do you think?  Does it count as a quilt?  Does that matter?!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. The guild is having a Yard Sale on Saturday.  I will be there from 10am-4pm chatting and demo-ing the ScanNCut.  Would love to see you!

  • Definitely an art quilt pushing the “rules”, but that’s what we’re supposed to do to move forward. Nice work.

  • I don’t know if it is a quilt or art piece or collage. Whatever you call it, it is striking. I like how you used free moting quilting. I’ve never tried it, but now it is on my list for a winter project.

  • Let’s see, you have a top and bottom layer of fabric, with a middle layer of filler all stitched together. That is definitely a quilt. I think that the collage in your quilt is just another way of saying applique. For isn’t applique a collage technique in quilting? The stitching is awesome – from the flowers on the forehead to the circles (or bubbles) surrounding the girl. Love this piece!

  • It’s not a bed quilt, obviously, but definitely belongs in a quilt show. Very unique. Great art quilt. And I love the bag. Nice to see your own work there. Congratulations.

  • Since I have assisted with judging for IQA-Houston, it is definitely considered an “art” quilt. I know some categories have changed, but I know there is one for small, and, people, animals, etc. I’m guessing, if it were to be judged, it would be placed in either one of those. Nice job!
