Art Journal Every Day: The Beginning of a New Journal!

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Today I'm cracking open a new-to-you journal!  Yay!

This is the journal I started in February and then abandoned for most of 2017.  However, I'm making up for lost time in the back half of the journal.

But I'm getting ahead of myself now.  Let's take a peek at how things started, shall we?

I usually leave the beginning end papers pretty blank, but I had my journal and some washi tape with me at a lecture by Jerry Posner.  And so I decided to tape all of his handouts into my journal so that they wouldn't get lost.

There were too many pieces for the page, so I created a flap:

You'll notice that this is a short page.

The more of these journals that I make, the more I find I like these uneven and irregular pages.

I've also started to bind in a lot of scrap papers that have holes in them.  This next spread features one of those scraps.

I turned that hole into an eye.

You can see that I glued a piece of a transparency into the hole, along with a piece of paper.  I love the effect!

The face on this page is full of lovely details:

The white stamping was done with paint and my "Heart Flake" Art Foamie.

I love that this page has the same hole as the other side, but the overall page has a totally different look and vibe!

I love this sort of floral + pattern thing I have going on this page.  I want to do some more of that!  One of the good things about letting time pass before I post these pages, is it allows me time to forget.  And then I can be re-inspired by myself!

If you're feeling stuck, why not try looking through the early pages of your journal?  Or a journal from last year?  It's a great way to re-energize your creativity!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have a journal page that has a list of what we need to take with us on our trip from SoCal to Oakridge, Oregon, a small town with a population of a little more than 3,000.
The treck to Oregon is just under 1,000 miles… Oakridge overlooks the Willamet Valley, and is surrounded by thick pine forests. Beautiful Snow capped (even in August) Mount Shasta, with an elevation of more than 14,000 feet is lays claim to being one of the highest volcanos in the Cascade Range of California.
Didn’t intend to turn this into a travelogue. I have a good number of pix, as well as maps and other related papers that I’ll include in my journal. Oh, and did I mention that we experirnced the life-changing solar eclipse? Won’t be another one for another 99 years! Got pix!

  • Lovely patterns. How did you get to participate in a lecture with Jerry Posner? Thanks for sharing. Also, why do you leave pages in the beginning and end of your journal blank? Your pages, faces and eyes are so visually interesting!!
