I loooooove art and I looooooooove books.  Put them together and you have one of my favorite things: art books!  Sometimes I'm more of a collector of them than a reader of them, but here's what is in my to-read pile:

The Art of Paper Weaving by Anna Schepper and Lene Schepper

PaperWeaving

This is a book that I borrowed from my local library (a great resource, by the way) and renewed twice and ultimately decided that I had to buy.  Really unusual project and all from woven paper!  It boggles my mind.  Of course, I refuse to start where the authors recommend — with the easy stuff — and so I've been struggling through a few of the more advanced designs without a lot of success.  Probably means I should begin with the first few exercises in the book, right?

Another paper engineering book I recently bought is Karakuri: How to Make Mechanical Paper Models That Move by Keisuke Saka and translated by Eri Hamaji.

Karakuri
It was a book that Amazon recommended to me and I just couldn't say no.  I haven't tried out any of the projects yet, but I am fascinated by the notion of creating moving paper models!  I'm looking forward to finding a few hours to give it a try.

Jane Davies was an Adventures in Arting Podcast guest back in 2015.  I subscribe to her monthly newsletter and I recently received the news that she had a new book!  Well, I had to snap it up because I think she's great and I love to support artists I know.

JaneDavies
Abstract Painting: the Elements of Visual Language by Jane Davies is a self-published book and it's beautiful!  Jane has written several other books and teaches classes non-stop.  Her work is beautiful and she's a thoughtful and intelligent teacher, all of which is reflected in her book.  I'm only a little ways into the book, but I look forward to seeing how her thoughts will influence my work.

What are you reading at the moment?!  Feel free to share in the comments so that everyone can find out!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I also just started Jane Davies’ book. It’s great! I’m trying to really learn from it and am doing all the exercises. As a fabric collage artist, I’ll be using needle and thread for some of them.

  • I also just started Jane’s book. I took her Big Fat Art class in Vermont last October and watched a painting demo last Saturday. She’s great! I also like Painting Abstracts by Rolina van Vliet. It’s got 65 exercises to do and includes lots of useful information. Very helpful!

  • I found a book I love Michele Cassou & Stewart Cubley (intro by Natalie Goldman) It titled, “Life, Paint and Passion”….’reclaiming the magic of spontaneous expression’ it’s a wonderful exploration of spontaneous expression with paint and brush. Focusing on the intuitive experience….making it all about process and not product. Just going tot he blank page/canvas and begin painting…no “plan” just what your subconscious is nudging you toward.
I thought of you and how you espouse the freedom of intuition and the process, as well. At least to a certain degree….
it’s a wonderful book…so many quotable quotes….Not a lot of pictures, but some of their student’s paintings.
