Peepshow or Tunnel Book for my Dad

My Dad has collected magic lanterns and optical toys my whole life.  You can see some of his beautiful collection on his website.  Many years ago he wrote a book on peepshows.  Not the seedy kind you're thinking of.  Here's a bit of a review of the book he wrote:

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer

Based outside of Boston, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is a painter, printmaker, and collage artist who constructs vibrant compositions. Her artwork investigates the interplay of identity and perception, inviting viewers to take a longer look. Julie works in layers, both physically and metaphorically, exploring what is visible and what is concealed. Passionate about connecting with and inspiring other artists, she shares her expertise through in-person workshops and her online classroom at MyArtPractice.com. Julie's achievements include high-profile clients, multiple publications - including her book, “Carve Stamp Play” - and exhibits in New York City and throughout Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Brown University.

  • Love this! How about an online class for those of us who can’t make it to Boston?

  • This looks like so much fun. I could play with such a tunnel book for hours. And it has so many potential. I can imagine this with your colorful stamped/ stenciled backgrounds and figures/ portraits.I remember the amazing pop-up book you shared (was it about Marvel comics?)Anyway, this is the closest to an adult pop-up book, but handmade. Maybe some layers could have moving parts. So excited to give this a try.Thank you for sharing Julie 🙂

  • Wow! Your piece turned out beautiful. I clicked into your Dad’s site also and am amazed at all the different types of optical toys he has amassed over the years. You are a lucky kid to have grown up with that collection. It must have inspired your own very great artistic talents. Thanks so much for sharing your Illustrated Tunnel Book. It gives me hope that I can make one too. Thanks again, Julie.

  • I’ve always called them dioramas rather than tunnel books. I made one for a friend as a Christmas gift this last year. I originally designed it to be lit from behind, but I ended up with so many layers that there was no room for the lights. Still, it turned out very nice and I am determined to make more.

  • Hi Julie,
Tunnel books are such fun to make! I did this with my 7th graders and they loved it. Then I took some of my own illustrations cut them up and assembled them into a tunnel book.
    Great workshop project!!
