I was at Target recently and I purchased a big jar of pop-together beads.  Essentially, they're for little kids. You can make bracelets and rings and necklaces simply by "popping" the beads together.  When I took them home and put them together they were a bit too plastic looking for my tastes.

So, I pulled out the spray paint and sprayed them white and then red and then black, flipping them around for each coat of spray paint.

Once they had dried, I assembled them into long strands.

Because the beads pop together, you can wear these strands multiple ways:

  • I love these! Such a fun idea. I do something similar with boring plastic buttons and alcohol inks. Sometimes you just have to improve things! 🙂

  • Only you could make such creative jewelry with kid beads from Target.
With attitude is my fav pic of you in this set, but single strand is the piece that I would most wear myself. Enjoy!

  • You are so creative! I will be revealing my age, but when I was in elementary school we had “pop-it” beads. They were all the same sphere shape but different colors. I’ll have to look for these in Target!!

  • These are really great and made using “pop beads”!!! That’s a blast from my past. One question – does the spray paint chip off? Thanks for the great idea, Julie!

  • Good morning Julie,
Love your beads you did a great job with spray painting them.
I like picture 3. They look awesome on you.
I want to tell you I watch yesterday your presentations on HSN with the Brother Scan N cut2. I loved the price that was offered with the bundle. You did an awesome job and looked great.
What I really liked was when you reproduced the card that Sara Davies aired in her showing.
Funny thing I watch her show at midnight saw that card and went to be thinking how I could reproduce that as well.
When you came on at the 3pm showing with the card I almost died. I guess sometimes we must be of the same thought.
I loved it and hope you can post on your utube how to do it.
You blew me away with that show.
I tried to call in but sorry I was to late and you where getting ready to finish it up. By time I got in the next vendor was coming on so I hung up.
With that all said I loved loved the shows and I wish they HSN would show the 3pm or 11 pm showing video. The have the one that you are on at 6am.
Great Job hope for a sell out.
    Happy Wednesday,

  • I haven’t thought of pop beads since I had to get rid of all them because the six year old force fed them to the three year old! The joys of parenthood.

  • Just let me say that these are not the pop beads that I got when I was a kid! These have a lot more style. Ours were just round, plastic and very brightly colored. 😀 But your idea to spray paint them was very creative; wouldn’t have thought of that. And yes, love the ‘with attitude’ photo best.

  • I still own a set of pop beads from the 50s. They’re bright blue and feel almost rubbery. For some reason I could never throw them away nor would I ever wear them again. I love what you did the Target beads. Your blog is always an inspiration.
