More than one quarter of the way through this 100 Day Project of creating a face every single day. Here are my thoughts at the moment:
- I have a great desire to stick with one method of creating a try a million variations on that idea, but I don't because I feel like "people might get bored." This is the problem with doing art exercises in public. I know that I shouldn't worry about "what people think" but this project does feel somewhat performative.
- The bullet point above makes me think that perhaps I should do some "just for me" art exercises going forward after this experiment is over.
- On the other hand, I feel like perhaps this is a (forced) opportunity to just get over myself and do what I want and stop worrying about other people and their opinions.
- On the other hand (how many hands do I have?!) I feel like sharing in public has given me a different perspective on some of the things I've created. Images that I've hated and others have liked. Images I've loved and others have not. Sharing is such a gift and a such a burden at the same time.
- I really prefer to work on not-blank substrates. Old projects or scrap paper or ephemera — all of this junque journaling I do has gotten me used to starting with something rather than a lonely white page.
- I feel a little bit like I'm creating without a goal. What am I trying to get better at? What am I trying to push myself towards? I think it's inevitable that this project will make me better and push me towards things, but I think it will happen faster and with more focus if I go at it with some kind of goal. And yet, here I am more than a quarter of the way through without a goal.
- In May I'm going to be on the road for a significant amount of time. Most of the month. How is that going to change or alter this process? What do I need to be prepared for?
- The process videos are now definitely part of the project, whether I intended them to be or not.
And now, faces 17 – 27:
- All faces are for sale HERE.
- Face 1
- Faces 2-9
- Faces 10-16
If you'd like to see the videos of the faces being made, you can see them on instagram.
Thanks for stopping by!
I enjoy reading your thought processes. Your questions are good ones that only you to have the answers for what feels right for you. You have a fan club for a reason and I doubt it will disappear any time soon.

Sometimes to get better at something we have to go outside our comfort zone. Have you ever considered doing some definitively male faces perhaps with facial hair?

I’m really enjoying seeing this process. I keep setting a goal to do 100 (fill in the blank) and I keep getting distracted by a different 100 items and tangents. I admire your ability to stick with this process. The changes in your art are really interesting and may be sufficient to get me back on track. Thanks!

I have always enjoyed working on scrap and old paper and junk mail. I think if you do that it is just who you are and what you like to do. I think you have done a million different things but your style always shines through. My feeling is if you do what you love everyone else will love it too and do not worry about what anyone thinks. I read your blog all the time but don’t comment very often. The older you get the more you do your art for yourself. I think for me, I’m not too worried about what others think I just want to keep learning.

You are a deep thinker. I believe putting yourself into an uncomfortable place is the way to go. What products have you not used yet? Can a face have tactile texture? What about that white piece of paper ie. how about black/white method? And what about old faces and child faces… I love what you have done so far.

The last one really struck me…a face atop a face.

In my opinion, if you’re having fun with the faces you shouldn’t beat yourself up about not having an over-arching goal for the project. Even though they’re obviously marvelous in and of themselves, they also strike me as the equivalent of a musician just having fun and riffing on a melody. They strike me as an offshoot of your art journal work, existing as stand-alone pieces.
