This is a painting that I finished at the end of 2016, but didn't manage to take photos of until recently.
It's another big one — about 3 feet by 3 feet.
It's so difficult to convey scale through photos on the internet, so I hope these photos with me and my hand help you "get" the size of it.
It's also a painting with a ton of texture!
As you might be able to infer from yesterday's painting. I'm a little bit in love with shine these days. Can you see the glitter in the detail photo above?
Well, I sprayed this funky glitter spray I had in my stash over portions of the painting to give it some serious shine.
It's surprisingly subtle for glitter. (Isn't that a funny sentence?)
For me, this painting feels like a companion to this painting:
Let's look at them side-by-side:
These are the similarities I see:
- Same size.
- Similar composition — enlarged face slightly shifted to the right.
- Blue eyes.
- Similar colors.
- Lots of texture on both.
- Other than the eyes, the features are mostly indicated rather than outlined.
- Paint drips all over.
These are the differences I see:
- The painting on the left has a more "finished" look.
- The teeth make the painting on the right feel goofy, where the painting on the left feels calmer somehow.
- The incredibly light blue eyes (right) are slightly creepy. Darker blue eyes seem more natural.
- There is more "white space" in the painting on the left.
- The moods of the two paintings are different even though the techniques and colors are very similar.
- The jaw line of the painting on the left is more clearly defined.
Do you see some things that I missed? I'd love to know!
Thanks for stopping by!

Terrific pieces Julie. Interesting optical illusion…the one on the right looks wider!

The eyes of the left one look kinder and more serene, even with his bleeding left eye. Perhaps he faces life with a more accepting attitude. The one on the right has trials to face.
I prefer the one on the left. The teeth of the one on the right are jarring and, because they are white, force the viewer to focus on them. Reminds me of a Poe story I read about someone who collects teeth. I don’t know why.
An interesting study side by side.

Hi Julie,
I think your painting are very expressional. The one on the right with the teeth reminds me of an old time actor name Peter Lorre. I saw a movie with him and another old time actor named Cary Grant in a movie called Arsenic and old lace. I think you capture Pete Lorre’s face and smile perfectly.
I love the glitter technique. I have some glitter brush pens red and blue and purple. I am wanting to get some clear ones.
I like the idea of glitter on acrylic paintings.
I think the paintings you showed yesterday and today are as I say very unique. your creations are stupendous.
Happy Wednesday,
Fawna

The painting on the left has more depth visually (black paint/shadows), while the painting on the right has more depth emotionally (it brings up emotions in the viewer).

The one one the right is a bit creepy–scary, almost. The one on the left is serene and invites one to contemplate. I could live with that one, but not the one on the right, which is jarring.

The gaze in the left painting is more direct; the gaze in the right painting could be partially making eye contact, but appears to be slightly looking over my shoulder. This is enhanced by the fact that one of the eyes isn’t completely visible.

Great work you have done! The teeth in the painting defines a lot of things. It shows so many emotions and it reminds us how a person with toothy grin looks like. Surely the other readers would also love this. Thank you very much for this unique post. I am happy to look up to your post from now.
