If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Flips, flaps and holes.  That's what these pages are all about.  I'm having so much fun finding ways to change up the way my art journal looks.  I'm working in a Junque Journal which has a lot of flexibility, but almost any journal — hello store bought journals — would work with all of these techniques.

I encourage you to customize and personalize your art journal in every way possible!  It's super fun and freeing!

You don't have to be a calligrapher to do super fun lettering in your art journal.  Your own handwriting looks great!

Last week I shared the front of this cut out.   So, here's the back:

Looks just as good in monotone as it did all multi-colored!

This is a detail I've added into several art journals. I love the way the hanging heart looks.

I'm usually pretty brutal and brave about covering up pretty things in my art journal, but I simply could not bring myself to cover up this gorgeous color and pattern!  I did do a little cutting it up….

…but no covering it up!

I love this page.  I love the face.  I love the colors.  I love the flaps.  I love, love, love it.  It's nice when that happens, isn't it?  I think it's the feeling that keeps me going and creating.  I'm looking for that happy high!

Stripes are always a good choice when making lettering a little more fancy.  And note the double shadow.  It's the little details that make lettering pop!

It may not look like it, but this is two flaps right on top of each other.

I like to include things that are silly or funny or surprising in my art journal.  This hidden face with the tongue out suits my silly personality perfectly!

I do like to include some notable events in my art journal.  They're good time markers when you look back through your pages.

  • Love the colors and the yummy handlettering Julie! I’ve just been painting lately, but these pages makes me long to go back to “real art journaling” with a bit of everything in them. 🙂

  • Julie, I have been following you for some years, as you are my favorite art journal artist. What I like best about your art journaling in the incorporation of lots of writing. I have had a love/hate affair with this as I am an avid journaler, and an a creative soul, but when I have attempted to marry art and journaling I experience extreme frustration because I cannot write on the mediums. Could you either point me in the direction of a tutorial, or make a post of how you are able to add so much writing? I would be sooo grateful! Thank you!

  • Love the colors and love the stamping over the colors. Visually exciting. Also love listening to your Podcast with your mom. Your mom asks great questions and is so supportive being able to synthesize what is being said by you and others who may not say pleasing things into a learning pearl of wisdom. Love listening and being a follower.
