Playful Fabric Printing Blog Hop & Giveaway

I'm so delighted to be sharing Melanie Testa & Carol Soderlund's new book, Playful Fabric Printing.

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Playful Fabric Printing Blog Hop & Giveaway

Melly and Carol asked some of their creative friends to participate in a "motif challenge."  Essentially, we were asked to use techniques from the book to create some printed fabric using designs inspired by a specific motif.  The motif we were given was x's & o's with the caveat that we were allowed to do something else if the call of creativity took us there.

My first reaction to the x's & o's was ugh.  Boring.

But, I was so wrong!

I began by sitting down with some white paper and two pens: a Permapaque double sided marker and a ballpoint pen.  And I just started drawing x's & o's.  I was surprised by how many fun patterns you could create with such a simple motif.  I took those doodles and turned them into Thermofax Screens.

I love how Thermofax prints look!  You get every single little scratchy detail!

Despite the name of the book — Playful Fabric Printing — I printed on deli paper instead of fabric.

And here's a photo with  my finger so you can get a sense of scale.  These prints are pretty tiny and delicate:

I also decided to create some foam stamps with the x's & o's theme.

The stamped prints look great when they're layered together:

At the time that I made these Thermofax Screens and Foam Stamps, I had a painting-in-progress hanging in my studio.  I decided to help it along with my brand new mark making tools!

As you can see, even if you're not a fabric artist, there are plenty of techniques in the book that you can apply to paper or canvas!

To celebrate the book's release, Carol and Melly are hosting a blog hop and giveaway!  At each stop you have a chance to win a copy of Playful Fabric Printing.  Here's the schedule:

To win a copy of Playful Fabric Printing, leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog (your answer must be posted on the blog itself, not on Facebook and not in an email reply):

Who is your favorite fabric artist?  Share a link to their blog/website if you can!

This contest will remain open until Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 11:59 EST.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I can’t really say I have a favorite fabric artist because there are so many fabulous artists around the world, but I am currently exploring Joanne Sharpe’s book, “Whimsical Stitching” and loving it. I also bow to every artist that is a part of The Chicago School of Fusing.

  • I honestly do not have a favorite. I really do not at this time know of any fabric printing artists. With that said Julie you have now introduced me to many here in this blog. Fabric printing is on my list of things to do. I have started it but have not foe filled it as of yet. I have a tee shirt that I am working on but not completed.
I am doing a Humming bird and adding on a pockets to the tee shirt. I am at this time trying it out with acrylic paints and Ceramcoat delta creative Textile Medium. To make the acrylic usable for fabric. I also have fabric paint but wanted to try this first.
To experiment I took the Bunny Banner project on the Brother Scan N Cut Canvas. I made a small stamp with that and my craft foam and my scan n cut. I then sponged on some back ground color and stamped the Bunny over it. Made the Bunny look like it was hopping around in it.
Fabric painting and stamping is one of my favorites. I am just at the experimental stage.
Thank you for this opportunity to enter this contest. I love this idea of contests.
    Happy Thursday,

I really enjoyed your approach above. Definitely some ideas to play around with.

The ones who got me interested in Mixed Media 10 years ago will always be inspirations: Ruth Rae, Rebekah Meier, Liz Kettle, Jane Dunnewold, and of course Melanie Testa!

  • It’s amazing that most of my favorite fabric artists are no longer practicing or have moved on to other media. However, I have taken stitching classes in the past from Jane LaFazio and Joanne Sharpe so I follow them. Currently I am enamored by the beautiful embroidery of Isobel Moore (http://isobelmoore.co.uk/) and I LOVEhttp://www.mister-finch.com/ )

  • It’s amazing that most of my favorite fabric artists are no longer practicing or have moved on to other media. However, I have taken stitching classes in the past from Jane LaFazio and Joanne Sharpe so I follow them. • Claire Benn… http://www.committedtocloth.uk is my latest crush! I’ve taken two of her classes after working with her books. Candice Edgerly got me started locally. Jane Dunnewold was my muse for many classes as I committed to traveling for workshops. I found Carol Soderlund who helped me with so much more than color. Elinor Noble and Kerr Grabowski also added to my education. How do you choose when each artist inspired you! I haven’t met you yet Julie, but you’ve spent a lot of time in my living room downloaded from the interweave press store… Lol!

  • Everyone has named all my favorites – the Kemshalls (the reason to get up every Thursday morning to see what new fun is on DMTV), Melly, Carol, Claire Benn, Judy Coates Perez, Jane Dunnewold, and I truly could not pick just one. Kind of like potato chips. 🙂

I have seen some fabric printing by some of the artists you list on the blog. My personal experience has been using Fabric on a Gelli Plate. And I must give full credit to Carolyn Dube acolorfuljourney.com. So at this point I am going to nominate her as my favorite fabric print artist!!!

  • Carla Sonheim has been a favorite for me. She is not a fiber artist but has worked in fabric, but I love her works.
