Let the Ten Year Blogiversary Begin!

BlogiversaryHeader-sm
My first blog post
was posted on December 24, 2006.  It was just four sentences.  No photos.

I'm slowly trying to gather or take photographs of some of my recent art work. Of course, the holidays are never a good time to get much of anything productive done. But, hopefully I'll have most of it together within the first week or two of 2007.

Thanks for visiting!

There's one other post in December — on Christmas day.  So even though I technically started blogging in 2006, I'm going to count the real start as January 3, 2007 (check it out if you want to see some very early art journal pages), which will make tomorrow my official ten-year **BLOGIVERSARY**!!

Why did I start blogging?

I think I remember the story, but I may have made it up.  It goes something like this:

I thought blogs were stupid and dangerous.  Why would you want to share your private life on the internet where anybody could see it?!  Eventually I became attracted to the notion of blogging because I wanted to be on design teams and it seemed like you had to have a blog in order to be on a design team.  I really got pushed off the fence by a "free month" offer that Typepad was making.  I figured I could try it out and then move on if I didn't like it after one month.

I made only one blogging rule for myself: no sharing random personal information.  Everything I shared would be shared through the filter of art.  That's why I named my blog, "Balzer Designs" — which turned out to be one of the best decisions ever.  But more on that later.

At first the art filter rule was really hard to keep.  I had to write and rewrite posts in order to find the line between personal and art-related personal.  At the time I was an avid scrapbooker so the line was paper thin.  Plus, sharing on the internet is wildly seductive (as we all know from Facebook and other social media sites).  Finding the line was really important to me and I'm glad I worked on finding it early on because oddly enough,  I still hold this rule as law handed down from on high.

My early posts are very introspective and searching.  I literally ask questions such as, "What's my style?"  I particularly like this January 15, 2007 pep talk/open question excerpt:

I think that when I design for a contest, I'm too busy trying to (1) be what I think they want, and (2) impress them — blow them away — and I get lost in the meantime. I am reminded of the famous opening song from A Chorus Line, which has resonated with me in my theatrical life for years. Here's an excerpt:

Who am I anyway?
Am I my resume?
That is a picture of a person I don't know.

What does he want from me?
What should I try to be?
So many faces all around, and here we go.
I need this job, oh God, I need this show.

In contrast, I found this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession… Do that which is assigned to you, and you cannot hope too much or dare too much."

And I am reminded that I should let "me" be more present. I guess the question is, why do I think that "me" is not enough?

How is it possible that I am still struggling with that question ten years later?!

To mark the passing of ten years of blogging I've decided to dedicate January to celebrating all of that amazing content.  Put on your seatbelts because it's going to be an awesome ride.  Here's what you can expect in January:

  • Mondays: Tutorial Re-Dos.  I've asked some talented artists to re-do tutorials from my archives.
  • Tuesdays: Picks from the Archives. I'm picking favorite posts and I've asked some friends of mine to pick some posts from the past that they love.
  • Wednesdays: Giveaways.  Can't have a party without gifts, right?!
  • Thursdays: Fresh Content.  Nothing recycled here.  New posts and new podcasts!
  • Fridays: Art Journal Every Day Revisits. I don't know about you, but I always look forward to Friday's Art Journal Every Day posts.  On Fridays I'll be sharing old AJED posts with new thoughts.
  • Saturday/Sunday: Testimonials. Thank you so much to everyone who sent in your kind comments and awesome photos.  On the weekends I'll be sharing these stories and images.

It's going to be a super awesome month!  Thanks for joining me for all the fun!

  • I read several blogs and yours is my favorite! Its colorful, unique, cheerful and down to earth. I love that you are interested in all kinds of crafts and do more “fine” art too. The Emererson quote is wonderful, I’m going to print that out and place it in my studio to remind me to stick with developing my own style. I would love to take a class from you someday! Will you be teaching any classes in MA this year? I hope you have a wonderful new year !

  • Julie, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Your generous spirit and talented have sparked my own desire to get started creating more of my own work. It’s fascinating to look back and see how your style has changed over the years. It seems you used to use a lot more watercolors.
After taking, So you Think You Can’t Draw clads, I’ve been drawing more. Carve December with tutorials from your stamp carving book, have filled my Decembers the past several years. I’ve created journals bound with your techniques, and I’m actually working in them.
May your next ten years continue to be filled with art and creativity. Thanks for taking us along on your art filled ride.

  • Congratulations, Julie! I ‘discovered’ your blog in 2013. (I was late to the blog world). I was hooked from the first post I read. I then went back and read every post you wrote before that and bookmarked all the tutorials I wanted to remember. You were only the second blog I subscribed to. I guess I’ve read every post you’ve written. I love seeing what you create and reading what you write. I’ve enjoyed watching your transformation and growth as an artist. One of the many things I like about your blog is that you haven’t become all business and selling. You’re still very personal, sharing and open. I love how generous you are with your talent and knowledge. I, also, love how innovative and versatile you art is. I’m an older generation than you and I appreciate you enthusiasm and energy, as well. You were the first artist to introduce me to mixed Media and I felt that I was finally home. I had ‘permission’ to pursue all the art methods I loved. Before you, I thought I was just unfocused. Now, my tendencies had a name and was ‘legitimate art. Thank you for how you’ve enriched my life and artwork. Bless you, and Happy Anniversary!

I am a little behind on your blogs after a busy retail reason, hope to catch up soon and definitely go back to ’06/07! Happy New Year!!

  • Congratulations on ten years! Your look has changed dramatically both the look of your physical appearance and the look of your blog. Both look more evolved and happier now. I’ve followed you for awhile now and you do show many variations of art. From scan n cut to other art forms, you examine many ways to express creativity. May you be blessed with many more years of blogging!

  • Congratulations on making 10 years with your blog! I’ve been a loyal follower from nearly the beginning, I can’t remember exactly how long. I know it was before crafters workshop. At any rate I give you much credit for always having something interesting and for being so consistent in sharing. You have long been a favorite blog of mine and it has been fun to watch you grow your brand and put yourself out there! Bravo!

  • Happy New Year Ms.Balzer! Happy 10 year Blog Anniversary! Describe my favorite stenciling technique? I believe my favorite stenciling technique would be the layered effect. Starting with the subtly background of color with larger shapes very faint but still defined, the medium shapes in middle ground with a slightly darker color and with a little more definition, and the smaller shapes in foreground with the strongest color and strongest definition. At this point I can start the layering process over or call the piece finished. I hope I described it well enough for you to understand. Have a wonderful day!

  • Julie you are so inspiring! I recently subscribed to your blog and can’t stop watching your videos! So, thank you for that! As far as stencils go, my favorite technique is to add color, mica powders, inclusions to thick medium or paste and scrape through stencils. I love texture!! And oh – I do have to wash those stencils! Dirty girl, meet clean girl 🙂

  • Hi Julie, Congratulations on your 10th anniversary blog! I started reading your blog three years ago and really like the content. I see you as a brave, free and creative spirit, who inspires me to follow my heart and my own voice. I still have some trepidation in sharing my thoughts and my arts with others (public). When that happens, I’d go to your blog and often find inspiration that help me overcome those feelings. My gratitude for all you do and share with me. Thank You!

  • Happy Anniversary!! You are such a great inspriation (most recently, to try making my own stamps – how fun!) I haven’t yet found your Make It Artsy Show on my local cable station (Bright House is turning into Spectrum in Orlando right now) but am sure I will never get anything else done when I do. My favorite way to use stencils is with modeling paste – I love that even little corners or snippets of a stencil’s design can start an idea in my journal, and later I can come back with the same stencil and repeat the pattern with spray mist or even outline edges with a gel pen. Looking forward to seeing what new ideas you come up with in 2017!!

  • I’m a “seasoned Senior” and became interested in getting in touch with my “creativity” vein after watching one of your Scapbook Soup episodes. I don’t know for certain if this is the correct comment space for your blog…so just doing it and time may tell!
STENCILING….I have purchased a Geli Pad after watching your show and also purchased a couple of your stencils from Hobby Lobby. I LOVE stenciling on the Geli Pad …I also use Deli paper (thank you!) and my stencil design and creations pop up in many places. Love You Julie and am so proud of you! Happy New Year! • Happy blogiversary! I love stencils so much. Using them with a Gelli plate and paint is just about the most fun a person can have with their clothes on. That said, I think I love stencils + Dylusions sprays just as much, if not more so. With Dylusions I can move so much faster, cleaning the stencils is easier (I’m not a Dirty Girl) and the colors are amazing. Meanwhile, back at the Gelli plate, I love using your foamies stamps as well as your stencils with the Gelli plate. I bought all the 2016 ones (except for the eye). Thanks for being such an inspiration.
