from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every DayIf you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

A while ago someone asked me to write a post about white pens for your art journal.  At the time, I didn't think there was a heck of a lot to say since I mainly use one white pen.

Which pen is that?

Well, back in 2013, I wrote a long post about pens in general, which included my favorite white pen. And my favorite is still the water-based white Sharpie, although almost exclusively the extra fine point.

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day

Writes on everything and it's permanent!  Plus it's opaque and super white.  I love it!

But, it's not the only pen on the block!  I recently did this video for Sakura of America demonstrating all of their different excellent white pens and how to combine them together:

In the video I use:

I used to use the Uniball Signo, which I know is a favorite for many people.  I did the writing on this page with the Uniball Signo back in 2007:

I no longer use it because it doesn't always work on top of acrylic paint (it's great on paper or watercolor) and it's not waterproof.

So, what's your favorite white pen?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I’m going to try the Sharpie Extra Fine. I have used the UniBall Signa but have had trouble with it skipping on some surfaces, and you never know what surface will “set it off.” lol

  • Wow….I loved the video and all the different pens and uses. Thank you! I have been so frustrated with the signol as it does not write over paint. Thanks so much for sharing. I cannot wait to try out some different white Sakura pens and markers especially the permapaque!

  • My favorite is still the Sharpie that was included in your kit of the month with Cocoa Daisy a few years back. Best ever for what I do. I have a few others, but always come back to the Sharpie. Thanks for the video, may have to try a few more now.

  • I too have been frustrated with the Signo. I love the Sharpie but recently I bought the white linen paint pen by Dylusions and I must say I’m quite p!eased with it especially on acrylic paint.

  • My two favorite white pens! Recently, I discovered the “Tim Holtz Distress Glaze.” It is great for rubbing over water mediums like the Uniball pen to make them waterproof. I use it over watercolor, watercolor pencils, gel pens and all water reactive mediums.

  • I second Chris’ question about gelly roll pens … so frustrated that I can’t get the same effects you do on your pages, is the paint I’m using and the white skips so much, so do the others, invested in about 2 dozen and really disappointed yet I read on various blogs how much they are loved. Thanks for this post, I love your product posts! Really helpful
