Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition

While in San Francisco, we went to the Contemporary Jewish Museum to see Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition.

I have seen a few Kubrick movies: The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, and Dr. Strangelove.  The exhibit definitely made me want to see more — especially A Clockwork Orange.  Each of the movies he created was represented by advertising, movie clips being shown, behind-the-scenes photographs, memorabilia from the set, and paperwork from production.  I especially liked the sketches of costumes, sets, and marketing materials.

I do want to note that there are some images of a graphic sexual nature in this post, so be aware before you scroll any further.  :)

It was particularly interesting to visit the exhibit with my brother, who is a filmmaker.  Just as I see an art museum slightly differently, I think that he saw this exhibit slightly differently.  I enjoyed chatting with him about the things from the exhibit which attracted him.  Unsurprisingly a lot of of what interested him was practical — budgets, correspondence with producers, notes on how the certain characters should walk, etc.

One of the many things that I love about museums is that we each bring our own point-of-view and personal experience to what's on display.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Napoleon: “I expect to make the best movie ever made.” And 2001: A Space Odyssey, the no-dialogue at the beginning and the end really drew you in to Outer Space. And who doesn’t equate the music with the space program. Thanks, Julie.

  • Hi there Julie,
This is very interesting. I was never a big fan of Clock work Orange or 2001 A space Odyssey. I was a fan of the Shinning. I thought that was done very well.
What I do like are the next two pictures down from Napoleon and Josephine. The First one looks like a portal diamond shape to another time, place etc. I am getting what one would call a total New Age feel, along with an Intuitive creation of the artist of the painting. Meaning I think they did the painting intuitively.
I am thinking that might have been something to do with the 2001 Odyssey. Put I do not remember seeing it. I also like the next one down from the Diamond portal that looks like one might have gone through the portal and arrived at a future destination.
I also like the wall of masks. I am not recognizing many of them. I am recalling two the first one on the left the Golden Mask the one in the top left hand corner.
The second is in the second row first on the left the white mask with what looks like a pirate hat on it. I think the mask wall is stunning and intriguing at the same time.
I also like the sketch of the two females Mother and child the red Hoody with the jumper I could see myself in something like that back in time.
I also found the Proposal budget list interesting. I myself would never know what it takes to make or plan to make a movie. “Kudos to your brother”. I hope to see some of his works in my life time.
I also did like the Napoleon Art as well.
Thank you Sandra for the link I will check it out. I wonder if Christiane Kubrick did the paintings I like most?
    Have a Fantastic Monday,

  • Man would I loved to have toured this. I was just near by visiting my daughter, too. That said, Clockwork Orange ranks high on my list of movies not watch again. I saw it when it originally aired in the movie theater. The violence terrified me. Fast forward to our present time and that movie is unfolding around us. I’m more of a kinder let’s work together Star Trek girl. 2001:A Space Odessy has always been a favorite. Saw that in the theater, too and fell in love. Kubrick had one creatively dark mind. Thanks again for sharing your artistic tours.

  • I still have not seen all of Clockwork Orange. What an interesting exhibit. The note about Napoleon really struck me.

  • Normally love this blog. Didn’t appreciate stumbling upon the woman statue (with the big hair) straddling a penis. Nice. There’s a fine line between art (Michelangelo) and pornography.
