When you go to the store to buy a card these days, they've gotten so very fancy — dimensional embellishments, foiling, glitter, shaped edges, laser cutting. It's amazing. The good news is that with a little imagination, you can make even cooler cards all by yourself.
Recently, I've been excited by the idea of creating tri-fold cards — meaning cards comprised of three folded parts.
I made this one for my Dad for Father's Day, using double-sided cardstock so that there was contrast between the three sections:
The card is a bit of an odd size, so I also made a custom envelope to go with it.
I made this card for my friend Nat's birthday:
As you can see, it's a different kind of tri-fold card. Instead of having three distinct parts like the first card, it's one large message that folds into three parts.
I have some ideas for future tri-fold cards I'd like to make. I want to make one that's like a baby version of a tunnel book. I also want to make one that has a banner that opens when you open the card. Haven't figured out the engineering on that one, but I think it's doable. I also think it would be cool to create a tri-fold card that has a moving part in the center section, like a hanging heart or something similar.
Have you made a tri-fold card? What did it look like? I'd love some ideas and I'm sure other readers would too!
Thanks for stopping by!
I love how you can personalize the card like having Nat’s name on her birthday card. I have not made a card that fancy but do appreciate that you can (as store bought fancy cards start at $6.99).

Very intricate and lacy! The only thing for me with cards like that are I’m always afraid the recipient will rip them when taking out of the envelope. I’m sure heavy duty cardstock will avoid all that. I made my last card for a dear friend too that was Deadpool themed. Keep up the great work Julie!

Hi Julie,
Looks like you have been busy using your scan n cut2. I have made folded cards and envelopes with mine. I have not tried the tri-fold card with the scan n cut. I have with the ultimate tool from Crafter’s Companion. I think you are familiar with Sara Davies. She too is on HSN.
I love how the Scan n Cut can cut out the words Happy Birthday and the name of the recipient. I think it really personalizes the card.
Some cards that I have made: I made a stencil with my scan n cut and then used water color paints to color in the stencil. I wrote out the sentiment via the scan n cut and a pen inside the card. I did that for Valentine’s day this year. I also made up some Christmas Cards and used markers to color in the designs. I also made some money cards for Christmas. They too came out pretty good and thanks to my scan n cut.
I made a center fold card using designs from the scan n cut and then laced it out and used ribbon to tie the front down. Inside I did the sentiment on a label design and then I added a picture of Maggie Smith dressed as the dowager Duchess. I was trying my hand at making a Downtown Abby card. It did come out pretty good if I say so myself.
Well you keep calm and Card on. I did like the card you made for your dad for his Birthday. I think you had a small happy birthday banner in that. I love these cards that you made here. They are fabulous and I am sure that all was so happy to receive them.
Have a great day,
Fawna

I’ve made them with a movable panel, and a staggered accordion, too. I just got a book that has templates for movable cards, and I want to make one that opens in the middle to show a scene–when you pull on tabs on the sides.

Hi Julie–I cannot email due to a problem in my mail set-up, but I have a question. I noticed you have cut words out with the scan-n-cut. I tried to scan in a donut-shaped scalloped flower as a test, but it didn’t cut out the center hole, just the outside scalloped oval. The letters you cut out all have the middle pieces cut out, like the A and the d. How can I get the machine to recognize the white space in the middle and cut it out? Please email me at terriec@live.com. Thanks so much for any help you can offer. I’m not real computer savvy, so am watching a lot of your Youtube videos.
