The apartment complex I live in hosted a "Paint & Sip" night.  If you're not familiar with the "Paint & Sip" concept, it's pretty basic: an instructor helps everyone paint a standard image in about two-and-a-half hours and you drink alcohol along the way.  To be perfectly frank, I was a little wary of going because I thought the painting was pretty darn ugly.  But, I like people.  And I adore people who paint.  So, I figured I'd sign-up and get to meet some of the people who live in my apartment complex who like making art.

The common room was all set up for painting with tabletop easels, blank canvases, and paper plates full of paint.  We were also provided with aprons and brushes.

These are a few of the paintings that this particular organization teaches:

The woman who organized our session, picked a palm tree/sunset painting.

We were taken through each step of the painting and I took photos along the way:

You can see that each person's painting is slightly different:

Some observations from this experience:

  • I was not thrilled about the painting we were making going into the event, but I had a great deal of fun making it.  It's a good reminder to me to focus on the process and not get caught up in the final result.
  • Throughout class students were really upset when their paintings didn't look "right" at each and every step.  When I teach, I spend at least 30% of the time trying to emphasize the importance of embracing what you're creating rather than judging and hating it.  This was a tough class for the teacher to do that in because the whole point is making a painting that looks like hers.
  • I was reminded of how intimidating art can be.  There was a woman who kept saying that she wanted to do a bright blue sky instead of a dusky one.  When the teacher came by she commented, "Oh, you didn't change the color of the sky."  And the woman responded, "I didn't know how."  I was reminded that while it may seem obvious to me how to make the sky bright blue, it isn't obvious to everyone.
  • Most of the people in the room introduced themselves by announcing that they weren't creative and had no idea how to paint.  I disagree.  Of course you're creative!  And of course you can paint.  Perhaps you can't paint realistically, but you can paint!  Anyone who signs up for a paint party at least has a desire to be creative, right?
  • I was reminded that making art together is an easy way to turn to strangers into chatty cohorts.  There was lots of conversation everywhere around me and I enjoyed meeting a bunch of new people.  It made me nostalgic for the old days of scrapbook crops — super fun!
  • I think I'm a better teacher because I'm also a frequent student.  This class made me think a lot about how I teach and how I explain things.  For example, there were only four brushes, but many of the students were confused by when to use which brush and even how to hold it.  I think teaching is about empowering your students.  I like to err on the side of over-explaining rather than under-explaining.

Overall, I had a great time!

  • I’m an intuitive painter who also teaches Wine and Paint classes. I always encourage my students to paint whatever they like, to change up the colors, shapes and patterns. I was initially hesitant to teach this type of class for many of the reasons you mentioned, but now that I’m doing them, I see that having the structure takes some of the fear away for people who may be painting for the first time since high school. It also re-acquaints people with painting and can be a doorway into more creative exploration. I totally agree with you on taking classes to help yourself be a better teacher-I learn not only what people are teaching, but how they teach and what I would do differently. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  • Your experience sounds similar to mine. It was fun socializing with others. I found out what a perfectionist I am. I found myself saying out loud, “it’s not perfect. ” Meanwhile the instructor is trying to explain that it doesn’t have to be. I have a friend who became “addicted to the classes. I finally told her that she was capable of doing them without paying $35 to someone. Once she figured that out, she started painting at home.

  • A very thoughtful commentary. I love that you truly participated, didn’t try to let your style show through, didn’t “take over” the class. That sort of restraint is difficult for me sometimes, especially if I feel like the teacher isn’t doing a good job. I learned from all you learned. And even though I focus own the process, a lot of the time the outcomes DOES matter to me more than I am willing to admit!

  • I’ve been to a couple of Paint Nites. I enjoyed the process and the atmosphere. At the last one, I really liked the fact that the teacher said we could paint whatever we wanted, that we didn’t have to follow the instructions. And one participant did, in fact, paint something different using the same color palette as the rest of us.

  • Thanks Julie for sharing. This is a new concept becoming popular almost everywhere. I have not attended one, since I don’t use alcohol and I just wrap myself around everyone making the same painting. However, your attending the class and your comments were quite interesting. Thanks for sharing with all of us, and thanks too to the others who have attended and shared their experiences.

  • I think all of the people did a great job at least all of your paintings looked like the target one. I signed me and a friend up a couple of years ago for one of these for her birthday. The painting that we were originally to do got changed because that instructor had to cancel and the new person changed the painting. Like you I thought it was pretty darn ugly. It turned out to be fun even though I don’t think we got enough instruction from the teacher and I still think what I painted is pretty darn ugly. 😉

  • This method seems to go against the grain of what you teach. If we’re trying to teach people to be creative, why are we doing it by having everyone copy someone else’s work instead of being led on their own path WITH some structure

  • I like the community room that you have at your apartment complex.
I’ve been to one and had a good time and yes, had to get past the “it’s not right” to me feelings. I don’t drink so it was interesting to see how the group heated up by the end of the evening. LOL
Our teacher did encourage us to paint what and how we wanted.

She was very helpful to those that needed help. Its not my cup of tea. Enjoyed hearing your observations. You are a fabulous teacher.

The 2 paintings I did there (2 different occasions) are nothing like my art – I consider them someone else’s. It was like putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and seeing how they do things. I had a great time with friends, and enjoyed the experience a lot. The paintings are awful, but the goal was to have fun, and I did 🙂

What type of easels did you use? If I were to get easels for your classroom at the store, what type would you recommend? We teach a lot of journaling, card classes and some canvas classes. Currently, we use set canvas on the table so we can stamp, drip splatter. Thanks for the help. Christy

  • Julie,
What type of easels did you use? If I were to get easels for your classroom at the store, what type would you recommend? We teach a lot of journaling, card classes and some canvas classes. Currently, we use set canvas on the table so we can stamp, drip splatter. Thanks for the help. Christy

  • I went to a paint party similar to what you attended. It was great fun! There were even some boyfriends/husbands in the crowd. We painted a whimsical night-like background with a bare branch tree in the foreground. The background went well, everyone was chatting and laughing. When we got to the tree it got deadly quiet and the instructor asked why we weren’t talking anymore and one of the guys burst out with, “We can’t talk…s**t just got REAL!” BWAHAHA!!!!

  • How fun was this. Something new is always ready to be learned, whether it’s about ourselves or about what we put to the canvas. I love to take an intro class once in a while for that very reason. You have to take the journey(s) to arrive at the ultimate destination.
There’s a Paint and Sip storefront coming soon near my place of work, I won’t need to go far (especially after a stressful day) for a little art camaraderie. And yes, a good instructor is everything, and makes for an excellent experience!

  • I attended a paint night on holiday in Cedar Key Florida. It was so much fun and we had a chance to learn and be creative. I met some delightful people and a fellow Canadian. Paint and sip is for everyone and may encourage someone who has never painted to be successful and maybe paint on their own. And off course there is the wine and we had Dove chocolates!!!

  • I attended one. It involved painting a cross in the colors of the Texas flag. I was crying on the inside. The instructor referred to the paint brushes as “THE BIG ONE” & “the lttle one”…. As soon as I got home I brayered over it with a delicious coat of gesso.
