When Are You Done With a Painting?

It's a question everyone has asked: How do I know when I'm done with this piece of art?

I wish there was an easy and scientific way to know that.  Unfortunately, it's more of a gut feeling.  My favorite way of explaining it came to me via Jenny Doh who said she got it from Jennifer Mercede: Knowing when you're done with a work of art is equivalent to the answer to the question, "Do you need to poop?"  I can't tell you if you need to poop.  Only you know the answer to that one.  The same thing is true for your art work.  You just get that feeling when *you* look at *your* art.

Other people may feel differently about where you stop, depending on their personal style.  But, I think it's important to listen to the voice inside your own head.

Today I thought I'd share the evolution of a painting.  I worked on this piece over ten days or so (I often take photos to help me "see" the overall composition a bit more easily).

I thought you might like to see the detail shot (hand for scale) below.  You can really start to see the layers and layers of paint and collage here:

I see lots of places on this journey where I *could* have stopped.  But I didn't.  Tomorrow I'll share the final piece (i.e. where I finally decided to stop).

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I learn so much from you! And I am “in love” with the third frame from the end, even though I realize it is not the finished product. Can’t wait to tune in tomorrow…

  • Happy Australia to you. The best news was your note about upcoming classes. You’re coming to St. Pete so I hope that means Whimsodoodle. I will be waiting with three friends who also follow you to pounce on one of your classes. May ask for it as a Christmas present. Finally. Hoorah!
