I have always wanted to try my hand at pysanky.  It's an Ukrainian egg dying technique in which you use layers of wax to act as a resist for each layer of dye.  Mom and I dropped in at a local shop called Pinecones & Needles.  It's an awesome little store run by a lovely woman named Anne:

She taught Mom and me the pysanky basics and let us go!

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Pysanky Eggs

You heat the kistka in the flame and then place it in the beeswax (the heated kistka melts the beeswax and fills the kistka's cup) and then draw on the egg.

Once you're ready, it goes in the first dye bath.

And then you add the next layer of wax.

This process continues and the colors get darker and the egg becomes more encrusted.

Finally, you have eggs that are covered in wax and dye.

You have to wait about an hour and then you melt the wax off of the eggs to reveal the layers of color!

I really loved the whole very long — almost 2 hours per egg — process.  I can't wait to try this process again with what I know now!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • What an interesting art form! Though it took a considerable amount of time, and patience I’m sure, all of the eggs turned out lovely. Such intricate designs and the layers of color are amazing. Thanks for sharing this art form that I would surely have otherwise never known about. πŸ™‚

  • Took a community Ed class to learn this in the late 70’s. So much fun! Your eggs are wonderfully artful, but there is also a fascinating aspect of symbolism in the traditional designs.
There’s a great book ‘Eggs Beautiful’by Johanna Luciow and Ann Kmit and Loretta Luciow filled with information and traditional patterns that is wonderfully informative. The authors are sisters who were taught the art by their grandmother.
They run ‘the Ukranian Gift shop’ in Minneapolis MN , possibly the best source of supplies. It’s been in business since the 1940’s and, yes they have a website and a Facebook page!

  • I’ve seen examples of this art form for many years, and always been so impressed by the patience and artistry that it must require. Really amazing to see all of the detail. Your first try (and your mom) is very impressive also. It would be really interesting to try it. How did you find a place to teach you? very cool. Thank you.

  • I made those years ago, very painstaking and easy to mess up but so cool to watch the wax come off to reveal the colors. Best to have a few going at once so you can be waxing one while others are in the dyes. Still have all my gear and have been thinking about trying them again. Great job. And you’re looking really good. Love your hair long and curly.

  • Love Psanky eggs! A girlfriend and I once spent a whole day making these eggs–it was so much fun! And the Psanky dyes are so brilliant! We did traditional and non-traditional designs. That was years and years ago, and she has since passed. I wonder what ever happened to those eggs? I still have the tools and all, but have not done it since. Hmmmm…maybe next year!

AND I agree with Susan Callahan – you ARE looking so thin! You’re going to just blow away.
