For me, Easter means chocolate and time to dye eggs!  It's a tradition.

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Easter Eggs

Every year I buy the Paas kit in the supermarket.  You drop the little color dye pellets into white vinegar and then add water and you've got dye!  This year I used the wax crayon that comes with the kit (and acts as a resist), some rubber bands, and my ScanNCut to create a bevy of colorful eggs!

I decorated these eggs with a friend who said that he hadn't decorated eggs since he was a kid.  I was reminded in that moment that we all start out as artists.  Drawing, painting, crafting — it all comes naturally when you're a child.  There's joy in creating.  No matter what it looked like I was always thrilled to show my artwork to anyone who would look at it.  And my Mom always dutifully displayed it — on the fridge, on the counter, all around the house.

The next thing my friend said made me pause.  He said that his eggs weren't, "very good."   Despite the fact that I immediately said to him, "Don't be silly. Your eggs are fantastic!" I had just been thinking that my own eggs weren't turning out very well.  It's easy to tell other people to embrace the journey and forget about the results, but harder advice to take yourself.  It was just a quick exchange, but I'm taking it as a reminder to myself to be kinder about results and more focused on the joy of the process.  I had a ton of fun decorating these eggs.  They're going to be given away and eaten and enjoyed.  And doesn't that make them the most beautiful eggs ever?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Yes it does but we are often hard on ourselves.
As I tell my son, judge yourself against yourself and then be happy with the growth you’ve made.

  • I’m with you girl. Have to do the Easter eggs every year. The year my twins were 2, I gave each of them an egg and said “be careful, they’re fragile”. My son looked at the egg and promptly smashed it on the tray of his high chair. We still laugh about it, even though he’s 38 now. Happy Easter.

  • Seriously cool egg designs, Julie. 🙂
I had some fake eggs I’d bought last year and didn’t use. I opted to use color mediums I already had instead of buying the die kit. I tried straight watercolors — cheap ones and they didn’t really have enough pigment. So, I moved on to watercolor pencils, which worked well since they were very pigmented, although it was a bit messy trying not to leave fingerprints. Finally, I used distress spray stains and Dylusions spray ink. The hands down winner for coverage and vibrant color was the Dylusions. All that being said, the die kits are probably the most straight-forward method! 🙂

  • One year my dad drew pictures of each of the Beatles on 4 different eggs. I wish I had a photo. But we didn’t go as photo crazy then as we do now. It was definitely a year that I didn’t want to eat the eggs!
Even the rubber band idea is so artistic and fun, I have different width of rubber bands so that should be interesting. Thanks for the ideas, and “thanks for the memories.”

  • Like all of your decorated eggs! Terrific designs that make eating them even more fun. 🙂 I agree that it comes easy to encourage others but not as easy to discount your own … art or whatever it is. I guess we are hardest on ourselves.

  • I love dying eggs with my daughter (who’s 4). I have such good memories of dying eggs with my sister. One year I drew a string bikini on an egg with a crayon, and oh my goodness, the result was so funny. My sister and I laughed uproariously until my mother shouted from the living room, “This is supposed to be a sacred holiday! STOP IT!” 😀
