Half-an-hour at the MFA Boston

You don't need a lot of time to see a lot at a museum.  I arrived a little bit early for class at the Boston MFA a few weeks ago.  With just thirty minutes I managed to see (and photograph) quite a few lovely things.  Here's what I saw:

Such an incredible variety of art styles!  And yet, you can see that I'm drawn to people — faces, figures.  There are a few things that are not people-related in this batch of photos, but for the most part, it's people.  And isn't it amazing how many different ways they are portrayed?  Sketchy drawings, grand sculptures, tiny jeweled sculptures, photo-realistic paintings, stylized prints, and on and on.  To me, the possibilities of art feel limitless.  Visiting an art museum is such a great reminder that whatever way you're creating is awesome!

Which of these pieces is your favorite?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Wow, what a great half hour!
The painting that starts with the older woman on the left and moves to the young man on the right is my favorite one. The gentleman with the cigar on the chair is my second. He just seems to command my attention.

  • I’m really drawn to the blue (or black) and white piece that looks like long arms and netting and the man with the hat and cigar, but my favorite is the staircase with man in green, yellow and red.

  • My favorite is the black and white bicycle race. You can feel so much movement in it. That was one packed 30 minute session.

  • I just have to ask this question… Is it rude to ask an artist what the art means? or what they were thinking while creating it? I asked a glass fusion artist that created a commissioned work, what the symbolism meant. He gave me a non answer. I found that confusing. I thought a piece of art would have meaning, or represent something. Am I wrong? Did I insult the artist? What do you think?
