from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Thank you so much for sharing info on how you art journal!  I thought I'd cut and paste a few of the comments from last week's Art Journal Every Day post.  I asked you to tell me whether you journal on loose pages or in a book and whether you do a lot of writing on your pages. Here's what a few of you said (lots of great comments, so take a peek back and read them all if you get a chance):

I am working in an altered book. I chose it to beat my blank page anxiety. And this really helped.I don't journal at all but i use few words in big bold letters to express how i feel, what i think.

I rarely write on my art journal pages, and when I do, it's to note some detail of the medium or subject for future reference. I use bound journals, wire-bound mixed media tablets, loose pages, composition books; whatever strikes my fancy at the time.

I usually journal in bound journals but two weeks ago I came upon some sort of old encyclopedia in folders and I thought I'd give it a try as a journal. I find it gives me more freedom and I quite love it. When I decide a page is finished I return it to the folder. I hardly ever write journaling. If I do it will be some sort of title or short comment or I choose a word that I repeat several times on the page.

I usually keep a bound sketchbook-Journal in which I draw and color the pages following my urge to doodle and say something to question, to explain things, to remember, and to reference later. I also use loose papers for exercise in mixing colors and abstract painting. Then I fold and stitch these abstract pages like a folio and use the white side as sketchbook-journal.

I have so many journals and I pick whatever I'm feeling like that day. Most of the time I use only watercolors or watercolor crayons/pencils just to make it quick and don't run my working table too much….you know, not all of us are lucky enough to have an art studio where they can leave the painting stuff all over the place and come back later to continue the pages or canvas or just to put things where they belong.

And now, without any further ado, here are the rest of my single pages created with my new Crafter's Workshop stencils!

I find that working on single pages both offers me freedom — no rules or constraints as far as size, orientation, technique — and makes me feel uptight — it feels like it should be "ART" instead of play.  Similarly, there's great privacy in working without a lot of journaling, but I find that I miss the beauty of dense written text.  I suppose that positive/negative thing is the reason that I have to keep creating all kinds of art journal pages.  I never want to get too comfortable.  I always try to push myself to create differently and stretch into uncomfortable places!

How about you?  Do you prefer to do what is familiar?  Or do you like to reach for something new?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I have a confession to make! I loved the Pebbles Tied stencil from the very start. But when i saw Orange Slices i thought “so silly, who needs orange slices as a stencil?”. I am taking every word back. I am blown away by the page you have made with that stencil. It is simply gorgoeus! This weeks’ single pages are absolutely my favourites so far. For me, at first working on single pages felt like they should be neat art.Too precious, almost like a canvas as you say.But then i have started using scrap pages to chase away the feeling. For Carve December i used separate pages to study my stamp sketches and then pasted them inside my art journal later. Likewise in January, for Pattern January, for some prompts i worked on single pages.I have let myself to work on these pages further after the challenge was over.I like changes, big or small. It is exciting to try new things 🙂 Thank you for sharing your art Julie.I really enjoy visiting this blog everyday and reading, watching, observing.I always leave inspired 🙂

  • I noticed when I doodle, I always do flowers small and large, B&W and colors. But overtime, I felt stagnant, so I take classes to learn new drawing and painting techniques, landscape painting, and figure drawing. I also draw faces using blind contour. Seeing how you use colors so freely and bravely inspired me to play with colors as well. I think to have an attitude of playfulness is important to the flow of creativity. I’m still a work in progress in that area… 🙂

  • I definitely like to try something new, and more than once! I love stencils and I’m very much into Gelli printing right now. And bright colors are always on the table. I have also been experimenting with different types of paint brushes.

  • Art journaling has become such an important part of my life. i have several spiral bound books going all the time. I seldom put writing in them. Maybe a word or phrase and occasionally a quote. Every page is different. over the years I have learned to STOP criticizing my work but enjoy what I have done and always trying to grow with new mediums and ideas.
I have a JULIE addiction and when I can’t get to a computer I find myself constantly wondering ‘what is Julie blogging today?’. THANK YOU Julie for your inspiring blog and your way with words that keep so many of us stimulated daily.

  • LOVE the page with the silhouette of a head with journaling on it – that is the talent you have that I appreciate the MOST _ putting SO much pattern and color together, that somehow ends up harmonious and beautiful instead of a mess. I’m working on progressing my messy pages into pleasing busy works of art – you are a true inspiration for me!
